🌳 Discover our new reforestation project in the North of Rio! This very promising project is one of the first examples of combining large-scale reforestation technology with the skills of local actors. To achieve the goal of 35% forest carbon absorption capacity by 2030 (IPCC), 8️⃣0️⃣ million hectares of new forests would need to be planted each year. However, only 8️⃣ million hectares are reforested annually (UN). To accelerate planting, MORFO’s drone technique must be supported by the knowledge and work of local populations. That's why @MORFO work with Instituto Terra de Preservação Ambiental - ITPA. In this 50-hectare project, 75% of the area is replanted by drones and 25% with the help of local populations who are already working there. ITPA provides MORFO with knowledge of the Mata Atlantica biome, access to a nursery for manual planting, and local workers to carry out the planting. This Brazilian organization has more than 20 years of experience in tree planting and has restored one million hectares of the degraded Atlantic forest. By planting seeds and restoring the ecosystem, this project helps regenerate this critical area that supplies 80% of Rio's water and 30% of its energy through the Guandu basin. #reforestation #forest #climatechange #climateaction #foret #reflorestamento #floresta #brasil #brazil #naturelovers #nature #RiodeJaneiro

Which schools should we visit in Curitiba, Rio de Janeiro and Montpellier? Do you have any suggestions? Today is Environmental Education Day, and we want to share knowledge! 💙 It’s the future generations who will nurture the forests we’re planting today. Next month, we’ll visit schools in these cities to spend a day with the kids and talk about the importance of fighting climate change. Thank you in advance for helping us find these schools! #educationday #environment #climateaction

🐊 Look who’s checking up on our reforestation projects! We’re used to sharing results with human regulators, but this kind of “inspector” is new! This caiman was spotted in the French Guianese Amazon. A bit intimidating? Not for Ronan, our Head of Operations, who captured this shot! By the way… running into an caiman might be startling (who wouldn’t be? 😅)… but it’s actually a GREAT SIGN! They’re strong indicators of a healthy ecosystem. 👇 Feel free to mention the most unexpected animal you’ve ever spotted in a forest! #wildlife #conservation #reforestation #nature

🌱 Yes, we’re proving it... ...It IS possible to restore large forest ecosystems sustainably, with high biodiversity and resilience. 🤯 THE CHALLENGE: FORESTS TAKE TIME In the beginning, our biggest question was: how can we show impact when forests need years to grow? Step by step, we’re showing results. Last month, we shared results from a two-year project in French Guiana’s Amazon. Today, we bring an update from a one-year project in Bahia, Brazil, where our recent visits confirmed the impact: - 1,000 trees per hectare, some already human height. - 19 of 24 planted species thriving, and others still sprouting. - Survived severe drought, unlike nearby plantations. - Up to 50% lower costs on large projects. 📈 HOW MORFO IS SOLVING THE QUALITY VS. COST CHALLENGE Many forest projects struggle with low biodiversity, lack of soil analysis, and minimal monitoring—barriers to real restoration at scale. Our approach: - Land diagnostics to adapt planting strategies, zone by zone. - Seedpods that boost germination, reduce costs, and protect young plants. - Local community partnerships to source the best seeds and share knowledge. - Advanced species mixes designed for resilience, now and in the future. - AI-based monitoring for biodiversity insights with 0.5 cm resolution across vast areas in minutes. - Drone planting with a capacity of 50 hectares per day. 💙 THANK YOU TO EVERYONE INVOLVED Seeing these forests thrive reinforces what’s possible. To meet 2030 targets, we need to multiply high-quality restoration efforts by 40x. We’re proving it can be done. It’s possible. And no, we’re not crazy 😂 Thanks to everyone who’s part of this journey! #reforestation #climateaction #bahia #tropicalforest

What is the true SIZE of DEGRADED LANDS? Since the end of the last ice age, the world has lost a third of its forests. In the last 100 years, this loss has accelerated, resulting in an area equivalent to twice the size of the United States. 📉 Annual deforestation rates: Today, we lose about 10 million hectares of forests each year, an area roughly the size of Portugal. 📍 Deforestation concentrated in tropical areas: - 95% of global deforestation occurs in tropical regions, like Latin America and Southeast Asia. - Agricultural expansion is responsible for up to 60% of this loss, driven by crops like palm oil and soy, as well as livestock farming. This massive loss threatens rich ecosystems and biodiversity. Want to learn more about these alarming numbers and how we can change this scenario? 💙 This is the 350th species in our catalog! If a few words could represent MORFO, one of them would be: biodiversity. The variety of species is the key to creating more resilient ecosystems. That’s why we select 10 to 25 species per project. Why? To ensure the environment adapts to climate changes and challenges. Our "magical book" of 360 species was carefully studied based on specific criteria that ensure the sustainability and success of our projects. To be part of our catalog, a species must meet at least 13 criteria, such as: 📍Being local 🧊 Having high resistance to water stress 🧬 Ensuring genetic diversity Because: Native seeds + species diversity = resilient ecosystems = EFFECTIVE solutions to climate change. Let's grow! #biodiversity #seeds #tropicalforest #reforestation

🐸 The world's second smallest vertebrate has been discovered in Brazil! Researchers from the State University of Campinas (Unicamp) described a new species of frog: Brachycephalus dacnis. Measuring only 6.95 millimeters, they are so small that they can fit on a 50-cent coin or on an adult's fingernail! The B. dacnis was named in honor of the Dacnis Project, which protects the Atlantic Forest, especially in Ubatuba, where they were collected. What makes these frogs even more amazing are their adaptations: - Fusion and loss of bones - Absence of digits and anatomical parts typical of larger frogs New discoveries stress the urgent need for forest restoration so these animals can thrive in healthy habitats. #newspecies #atlanticforest #animals #tropicalforest

"The time for empty promises is OVER if we want to save the planet." 5 years left to act. Let’s get straight to it: 💰 5x MORE FOR BIODIVERSITY A new report from NatureFinance brought big numbers: - Biodiversity gets $166 billion a year from private investors. - By 2030, this needs to hit $830 billion—5 times more! 🏢 SHIFTING FROM PUBLIC TO PRIVATE FUNDING The study "The State of Finance for Nature" revealed vital data: - Right now, 82% of funding comes from public sources. - But private funding needs to 7x, growing from 18% to 33% by 2050. Governments also need to step up, reaching $359 billion a year by 2025 and $439 billion by 2030 for Nature-Based Solutions (NbS). 💡 IT'S ABOUT QUALITY AND QUANTITY Saying "companies need to pay more" is easy, but for us working in conservation and restoration, it’s about raising the bar on project quality. High-quality projects need to scale 40x by 2030 to hit the 20 million-ton carbon capture target. Investors are looking for strong, low-risk projects. The future is in the choices we make today. #funding #nature #nbs #climateaction
