Building the Energy of Tomorrow: Advanced Materials for Fusion As the world transitions toward cleaner, more efficient energy solutions, advanced materials are at the heart of innovation. Next-generation reactors, including Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) and fusion technologies, are pushing the boundaries of material performance. Key Challenges in High-Performance Materials for Future Energy Systems: - Resistance to high-temperature corrosion (e.g., molten salt reactors) - Durability under neutron irradiation (e.g., fusion reactor walls) - Thermal shock resistance for reactor components - Complex multi-material assemblies (e.g., tungsten-copper interfaces in divertors) 💡 How FAST/SPS Contributes to the Energy Revolution Norimat’s expertise in Field-Assisted Sintering Technology (FAST/SPS) enables the rapid densification of high-performance materials, unlocking new possibilities — Carbide-based fuels & claddings (SiC): improved safety & performance | Nickel-based superalloys: high-temperature oxidation & creep resistance | Tungsten-copper composites (FGM or complexe assemblies): plasma-facing components with enhanced thermal management | Advanced ceramics & coatings: extending component lifetimes in extreme environments. By leveraging FAST/SPS, we enable near-net-shape manufacturing, minimize material waste, and optimize microstructures for maximum performance. These innovations are critical for SMR, fusion, and Gen-IV reactors. Arnaud Fregeac, PhD Advanced materials are paving the way for the future of energy. 3D Printing of Near-Net-Shape Deloro/Stellite Parts & FAST/SPS High-performance alloys such as Deloro (nickel-based alloys) and Stellite (cobalt-based alloys) offer an unmatched combination of exceptional properties, including resistance to wear, corrosion, and high temperatures. These characteristics make them indispensable in critical sectors such as aerospace, energy, and exploration, where reliability and performance in extreme conditions are paramount. Near-net-shape (NNS) 3D printing presents a promising solution to overcome the challenges associated with these alloys, such as their high cost, machining difficulty, the relative fragility of certain grades, and competition from alternative materials. 3D printing enables the production of Deloro/Stellite NNS parts far more economically than conventional methods, while also reducing material waste and the process’s carbon footprint. Additionally, 3D printing facilitates the creation of complex geometries, minimizes or even eliminates the need for machining, and ensures production-standard dimensional accuracy and process repeatability.
