🛰️ Copernicus Supporting Sustainable Supply Chains 🌱 It’s no secret that #agricultural expansion is the leading driver of deforestation worldwide. New international regulations are emerging to reduce #deforestation and forest degradation globally, focusing on commodities such as coffee, wood, cocoa, cattle, palm oil and rubber. Satellite #EO capabilities are increasingly key to #monitoring compliance with these regulatory frameworks, as they provide global and transparent data, essential to verify and support #sustainable practices. #Copernicus, the EU’s flagship Earth Observation programme, is a key tool to monitor deforestation. It provides global images free-of-charge, enabling assessments of land use and change detection. While Copernicus is a powerful tool, the EUSPA - EU Agency for the Space Programme report concludes that achieving the precision required for compliance often involves combining it with: ✅ Ground truthing for on-the-ground data validation  ✅ Very high-resolution imagery for detailed analysis  ✅ Commodity-specific maps to address industry nuances, such as shade-grown coffee plantations EO service providers are increasingly responding to regulatory constraints in individual #verticals with tailored, #satellite-enabled solutions. Recognising the unique challenges of individual regulations linked to commodities like coffee, as well as the inherent limitations of EO and Copernicus, these providers are continuously enhancing their processes and refining methodologies, delivering improved accuracy and reliability to stakeholders.
