If you’ve been faced with challenges recently to find companies willing to accept batteries for recycling and storage these days, you’re not the only one. What’s happening? Capacity for storage and recycling batteries is being reached in Europe. 🤔 Why? A few reasons: 1. ♻ Recycling centers in Europe are arriving at maximum capacity per their permitted containers, according to feedback from our customers and general experience.  2. 🇳🇱 In the Netherlands, with possibly more countries 🇪🇺 to follow suit, new regulations requiring PGS 37 safety standards are causing battery operators to refit their facilities and storage containers with the proper features. Implementing these changes is costly, takes planning and time. On top of that, Government and legislation makes it difficult to ship batteries across borders. Few permits are given for storage according to PGS-37 as they require high security and safe premises and only a handful of companies currently comply. 3. 📦 Availability of PGS-37 approved containers. With the new safety regulations, new containers are requested - and not many companies are capable of providing the required features. 💡 What can you do about it? ✅ Before recycling and storing batteries, include REPAIR in your lifecycle. Today, budgets are still going to storage to delay battery repair, recycling or diagnostics, which increases fire risks 🔥 😨 in unprotected warehouses.  We cannot afford any longer to take the “easy route” and send healthy batteries with 80%+ State of Health straight to recycling - just because a connector doesn’t work for example. Our responsibility as an industry is to make this chain in the circular economy work. 💰 At what cost? 🌍 Beyond the circular economy, this is about a sustainable future for our businesses as well as protecting our critical raw materials for our planet and using resources wisely.
