The global ocean observing system (GOOS) is the foundation for everything we know on the ocean - it provides the ocean data for weather and extreme event forecasting, climate, health and biodiversity. The scientific variables to be measured, the networks, the coordinators at global, regional, national and system level. But what should the future GOOS look like to help provide the data needed? The ocean is our future. We need to change and we are looking for an experienced consultancy to help us manage that change for the future. Look forward to hearing from you!

GOOS is pleased to announce the election of two new co-chairs to lead its Steering Committee: Dr. David Legler, Director of the Global Ocean Monitoring and Observing Program at NOAA: National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration, and Dr. Balakrishnan Nair, Director I/C of the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS)! 🌊 When sailing pushes boundaries, science sets sail too! As they test their endurance and the limits of their boats, battling strong winds on their route to the Cape of Good Hope, the skippers of the Vendée Globe 2024 are making an incredible contribution to ocean science. Over the past few days, 10 #Argofloats have been deployed in the South Atlantic Ocean, where data is critically needed. Thanks to these brave and engaged skippers, the floats are already transmitting real-time data on temperature and salinity to scientists worldwide, contributing directly to Global Ocean Observing System (GOOS) implementation. This data will significantly improve our understanding of the #ocean and climate systems, enhancing both weather and climate forecasts. These floats will continue to serve the scientific community for up to 8 years, providing valuable 10-day updates to global data centers. The extraordinary adventure of this solo round-the-world race offers a unique opportunity to merge competitive sailing with science, showcasing the incredible potential of collaboration. SAILING FOR SCIENCE: 25 skippers champion ocean observations in Vendée Globe 2024 “The partnership with Vendée Globe skippers is an invaluable asset for the Global Ocean Observing System, extending our reach into some of the most remote and under-sampled areas of the world’s ocean,” says Joanna Post, Director of the GOOS Management Team. “By gathering real-time data, these sailors provide insights that would otherwise be impossible to obtain, enabling us to better understand and predict critical changes in ocean and climate patterns.
