Holocaust victim Fritz Grünbaum owned the "Girl With Black Hair”, recently seized by the Manhattan D.A. from the Allen Memorial Art Museum on suspicion that it was Nazi-looted art. The museum doesn't publish Nazi era provenance for artworks in its online collection-- except for 30 artworks whose provenance is shown in a slide show. What progress has been made in clarifying the ownership history of these -- and other -- artworks at Oberlin? https://lnkd.in/gQB2P8MJ #FAIR #Oberlin #provenanceresearch #arthistoryprojects

How easy would it be to track the names "in between" looting or forced sale and acquisition by a museum? Pretty easy, really. Then, check other provenance texts for the presence of these same names. Where gaps or dodgy refs, verify in depth. Why museums haven't done this already? #icom #digitalmethods #duediligence #artlaw https://lnkd.in/e3rn4fYb

If you haven't read it yet, the report on the Bürhle collection by Dr.Raphael Gross is excellent. (Review of the Provenance Research of the E. G. Bührle Foundation) Link to the Report: Überprüfung der Provenienzforschung der Stiftung Sammlung E. G. Bührle https://lnkd.in/eTkRfg2p Link to article in Apollo about the report ("An independent Swiss report has described the quality of the existing provenance research into the Emil G. Bührle Collection as ‘superficial’ and full of ‘false results’. The report by Raphael Gross, president of the Deutsches Historisches Museum Foundation, was commissioned in May 2023 by the canton and city of Zurich and the board of the Kunsthaus Zürich. The latter accepted a long-term loan of works from the Bührle Collection in 2012 ") https://lnkd.in/eFTn72Te #Switzerland #art #Holocausthistory #investigations

Manet's La Sultane, in the Bührle collection, is the object of a Lost Art Search Request from the heirs of Max Silberberg. Can parallel timelines help to understand its fate? Below: 1932 to 1942 Timeline 1 (Blue) Paul Rosenberg and La Sultane; Timeline 2 (Black) Physical location of La Sultane; Timeline 3 (Red) Max Silberberg, persecution and murder by Nazis Note: The provenance for this Manet has changed many times. In 2016, for example, the provenance suggested that Max Silberberg never really owned La Sultane, and "Art market Paris & New York • by 1934/35 " was inserted in between "Max Silberberg Breslau • by 1928? until 1932?" and "Paul Rosenberg Paris & New York • 1937–1953" https://lnkd.in/eR6cgxFq The dataviz attempts to reflect the 2024 provenance published by the Bührle Collection https://lnkd.in/ekmWP-8s as well as biographical information about Max Silberberg. See also: Search Request Max Silberberg on Lost Art: https://lnkd.in/epNsNCy9 Please signal any errors so that they may be corrected. (A fourth timeline could add important historical context: Hitler named Chancellor of Germany on January 30, 1933. Paris fell to Nazi Germany on June 14, 1940) #timelines #Holocaustresearch #storytelling #Dataviz
