Nearly one in five adults are low performers in literacy, numeracy and problem solving. In today’s fast-paced, information-rich world, having the right skills is more important than ever. The latest OECD Survey of #AdultSkills reveals: ➡️ Gender gaps are widening, and foreign-born adults face lower proficiency, often due to language barriers. ➡️ ️There are considerable differences in skill levels within and between nations. ➡️ Better numeracy skills are positively associated with greater life satisfaction and higher wages. These skills are key to maintaining a strong and productive workforce and helping adults to meaningfully participate in democracy.

Today on International #AntiCorruptionDay we reflect on the critical need for transparency, accountability, and ethical leadership. Corruption undermines economic development, distorts markets and raises the cost of doing business. It remains a global challenge with direct impacts on people’s lives that requires collective action from governments, businesses, and civil society. The OECD has been a driving force in fighting corruption for more than 25 years through the OECD Anti-Bribery Convention. With 46 countries onboard and a rigorous monitoring mechanism, the Convention is a powerful tool to combat foreign bribery in international business transactions. It has modified the global landscape for fighting economic and financial crime through international co-operation, by encouraging more transparent, fair and efficient global markets, and supporting good governance. Are countries’ integrity frameworks robust enough to effectively combat #corruption risks? While governments have strengthened anti-corruption regulations over the years, implementing them remains a challenge. Reliable data plays a pivotal role in bridging this gap. The OECD Public Integrity Indicators (PIIs) offer a data-driven approach to help countries evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of their national integrity systems and their implementation. On International #AntiCorruptionDay, 23 new countries have joined the PIIs, with data for 55 countries now available on our portal, underscoring a shared global commitment to integrity. New insights on climate policy spillovers and carbon leakage from the OECD Summary Report prepared for the #ClimateClub, launched at #COP29. The Summary Report provides key findings on the international impacts of diverse climate policies: ➡️ Differences in climate policies can entail international spillovers. ➡️ Carbon leakage is one of the most discussed and studied international spillovers from climate change mitigation policy. ➡️ Meeting climate targets while managing international spillovers (i.e. minimising negative spillovers and amplifying positive ones) requires innovative policy solutions, synergies, and collaborative approaches. ➡️ International co-operation holds significant potential to improve the effectiveness of countries’ policies to reduce global emissions, including by mitigating carbon leakage risks. The Climate Club, officially launched one year ago at COP28, is an inclusive and ambitious intergovernmental high-level forum with 43 member countries for exchange on industry decarbonisation. It serves as a framework for increased collective action. Discover more about the Climate Club’s work: https://brnw.ch/21wPflq Read the report: https://brnw.ch/21wPflp | #ClimateClubCOP29

Life expectancy is, on average, 2.4 years lower in remote regions compared to metropolitan regions. The 🆕 OECD Regions and Cities at a Glance 2024 report provides a comprehensive look into regional and local trends, highlighting how regions compare within and across countries. Key insights include: ➡️ Changing demography: One in five OECD regions has experienced population decline over the past two decades, mostly in Europe and Asia. The workforce is expected to shrink in 64% of regions far from a large- or midsize city in the next decade. ➡️ Digital divide: Internet speeds in large OECD cities are 14% higher than their national average. In Austria, Bulgaria, Greece, and Türkiye, speeds in large cities exceed the national average by more than 25%. In small cities, broadband download speeds more than doubled between 2021 and 2024. ➡️ Public transport access: In large cities, only 1 in 2 people living in suburbs (50%) can reach public transport within a 10-minute walk, compared to 84% in urban centres, reflecting a gap of 34 percentage points (p.p.) overall. This gap is above 40 p.p. in Latin and North American cities, but less than 15 p.p. in Asian and Europe. Low-density, car-oriented urban designs exacerbate this gap. ➡️ Health outcomes: The report shows life expectancy is, on average, 2.4 years lower in remote regions compared to metropolitan regions. ➡️ Labour and skill shortages: Metropolitan regions have twice as many STEM students per 1,000 working-age people as non-metropolitan regions - a critical factor in addressing future labour and skill shortages.
