NEW: AI agents could be the next tech hype bubble to burst, say VCs: ‘It’s Web3 and Metaverse mania again’ —— As the hype surrounding AI agent startups continues to grow, VCs are preparing for a bust cycle that could wipe out many of the sector’s darlings. Investors warn that the cycle is building because some companies developing agentic AI — large language model-based applications to automate tasks without a human in the loop — are raising money at inflated valuations and for products that might not live up to expectations. Six weeks into 2025, European startups developing AI agents have picked up €481m, according to Sifted data — more than a quarter of the funds raised by such startups across 2024. Many expect investment to go up and to the right over the next year. While investors scramble to back winners in the space, there’s an air of caution hanging over the sector. The startup world is no stranger to a hype bubble bursting on a new, and potentially transformative, technology, with recent examples in the swift rise and fall of a number of Web3 and metaverse startups. “There is a significant risk of a boom-bust cycle with AI agent startups,” says Denny G., associate at Runa Capital. “This era is no different than the cloud, mobile and internet eras.” Full story: https://lnkd.in/eE37Dmpb

Agentic AI seems to be on the mind of most VCs I'm speaking to at the moment. I asked seven of them which European AI agent startups they're watching. --- AI agents — tools that use the tech to perform tasks without needing a human in the loop — could be the big startup hype bubble in 2025. Many VCs tell Sifted they're looking to deploy capital into AI agent startups this year, as companies hit the market with tech claiming to automate whole workflows and make companies more efficient. Silicon Valley is also champing at the bit. In January, OpenAI’s Sam Altman predicted that the first AI agents will “materially change the output of companies” this year. Half of Y Combinator’s most recent list of startups it wants to see pitched in 2025 were for companies building the tech. But which European AI agent startups have investors got their eyes on? Forget “move fast and break things”. Just move fast and talk to the media. It’s how you stay in the conversation. I worked for Bloomberg News for years and it’s still a strange place in my memory. Conversations like, “If London is the UK capital, then what is Edinburgh?” or, “Rewrite the headline so the world’s fourth-richest man doesn’t sound poor” or, “Does this coup count as a market-moving event?” were just standard operating weirdness. 🎪 But when the big stories break, Bloomberg is unstoppable. A global army of journalists drilling deeper and faster than anyone else. I’ve seen it firsthand with the passing of Nelson Mandela, blockbuster M&A deals, the London Olympics, and the 2014 annexation of Crimea. Yesterday was one of those days. No fewer than ten reporters and editors jumped on the DeepSeek AI story. Journalists everywhere wanted commentary. I got requests from three major outlets but only landed one quote. Why? 🤷♂️ Mehdi Osman of our portfolio company, OpenReplay, said, “Sure, I’ll speak with Bloomberg,” while others were still rehearsing. The result? He landed in their Big Take alongside Alphabet Inc., Meta, NVIDIA, Databricks, and Google DeepMind. Hundreds of voices to choose from, but Mehdi made it in because he acted fast. This is old news to PR pros like Nick Baines, Cathy White, Elisheva Marcus, Katie Finn, Jaclyn Dadas-Kraper, Marc Cohen and Rhiannon Evans-Young: “Yeah, Spillane, we know. #Media101. Why is this garbage clogging up my LinkedIn feed?” 🤦♀️ It’s a good reminder for clients and portfolio companies: Be ready when the #media calls. Stories move quickly, and those who engage early often shape the narrative. And since we’re all slaves to the algorithm, here’s a gratuitous boat pic of Mehdi and my colleague Francesco Ricciuti.
