    🔬 We are thrilled to announce that our co-founder and scientific adviser, Michel De Waard, has contributed to a groundbreaking publication in the esteemed scientific journal BMC Complementary and Alternative Medicine and Therapies. 🎉 📚 Titled "Immunomodulatory effects of epiphytic Loranthus micranthus leaf extracts collected from two host plants: Psidium guajava and Parkia biglobosa" this study sheds light on the potential of natural immunomodulators in replacing current chemotherapy drugs with severe side effects. 🌟 Michel and collaborators’ meticulous research explores the immunomodulatory effects of Loranthus micranthus leaves extracts on innate and adoptive immune responses, as well as their impact on cyclophosphamide-induced myelosuppression in rats. 🔍 The findings reveal an abundance of pharmacologically relevant phytochemicals in both Loranthus micranthus leaf extracts, particularly in Psidium guajava. Moreover, the extracts exhibited promising immunostimulatory properties without adverse acute toxicity effects. 💡 Key discoveries include the extracts' ability to enhance total leukocyte count, differential leukocyte counting, and primary/secondary antibody titers, surpassing even the effects of the standard drug levamisole. Notably, Loranthus micranthus leaf extracts from Psidium guajava demonstrated superior immunomodulatory actions compared to the one extracted from Parkia biglobosa, indicating its potential as a potent immunostimulant. 🔬 This research not only paves the way for the development of safer alternatives to current immunomodulatory drugs but also opens new avenues for exploring natural compounds in combating chronic diseases. 🎓 Congratulations to Michel De Waard and the entire research team for their significant contribution to advancing scientific knowledge in immunology and pharmacology! 🌟 🔗 Idoko, N.D., Chukwuma, I.F., Nworah, F.N. et al.     New citation of a SMARTOX peptide in Nature Communications :   Nat Commun. 15: 54 (2024). “Selective blockade of Cav1.2 (α1C) versus Cav1.3 (α1D) L-type calcium channels by the black mamba toxin calciseptine. doi: 10.1038/s41467-023-43502-w”   --   🔬🧬 Exciting news alert for research in cardiac physiology !   In this recent publication, Pietro Mesirca and collaborators illustrate that calciseptine is selective for the Cav1.2 L-type current over the Cav1.3 L-type channel. By using this Cav1.2 selective tool, the group unravels the heart's intricate mechanisms by illustrating that the peptide affects contraction by leaving pacemaker activity untouched.   Dihydropyridines (DHPs) are typically used as Cav1 agonists or antagonists. However, their lack of selectivity due to the highly similar DHP binding sites present on both Cav1.2 and Cav1.3 calcium channel isoforms does not easily allow distinguishing the physio-pathological roles underpinning each channel function. For this reason, calciseptine can now be considered as a handy peptide tool, selective for Cav1.2, to differentiate its function from Cav1.3 in the heart or other tissues that would express these channel types.
