𝗪𝗿𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘂𝗽 #AfWASA2025    What an incredible session! 🚀    This week, together with Open Capital we explored how rural water services can scale sustainably and become financially viable — even in complex environments like #Mali and #BurkinaFaso.    Missed the session? Here are the key takeaways:    ⚠️ Rural water services are challenging, especially in conflict-affected areas.  🏗️ Large networks can be profitable at scale but aren’t viable for remote, low-density regions.  ☀️ Smaller systems (manual pumps, solar stations) are fit for remote areas but often operate at a loss.  🔄 A mix of large & small systems enables cross-subsidization and long-term sustainability.  💰 Public finance & RBF grants are essential to cover costs and help utilities scale.  🤝 Governments & financing partners must understand these dynamics to provide better financing support.   Want the full picture? Download our study in English and French on our website. 👉 𝗟𝗶𝗻𝗸 𝗶𝗻 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀   Huge thanks to our speakers, panellists and all who joined us in pushing the conversation forward!    Kigen Chelimo, CFA Louis Boorstin Hollie Lippert Fatim-Hélène Traoré Eng. 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗳𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗥𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗪𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗦𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲𝘀 – 𝗠𝘆𝘁𝗵 𝗼𝗿 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆? 💧📊   As we gather today at #AfWASA2025 for a critical discussion on scaling rural water services, we are excited to launch our latest study in collaboration with Open Capital.   This study, based on Uduma’s operations in #Mali and #BurkinaFaso, provides data-driven insights into the financial viability of rural water services :   ✅ 𝗖𝗿𝗼𝘀𝘀-𝘀𝘂𝗯𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗶𝘇𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝘀 𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗮𝗹 – Large-scale water networks can generate enough revenue to support smaller, less profitable systems like solar water stations and manual pumps. Balancing different service models is key to long-term financial health.   ✅ 𝗦𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘂𝗽 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗼𝗶𝗻𝘁 – Profitability in rural water services is only possible at scale. Expanding operations and modernizing infrastructure (e.g., prepaid meters, solarization) improves efficiency and sustainability.   ✅ 𝗟𝗼𝗻𝗴-𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗺 𝗳𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗱𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 – Results-Based Financing and long-term public-private contracts help bridge financial gaps, ensuring sustainable service delivery in rural areas.   💬 Let’s challenge assumptions and build a future where scalable, financially viable, and sustainable rural water access is a reality!   Thierry Barbotte Mikael DUPUIS Georges Mikhael Alinta Geling Kigen Chelimo, CFA Perez Magoola Louis Boorstin #WaterAccess #RuralWater #Impact #africa #Uduma

💧 𝗗𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗥𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗪𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗔𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗶𝗻 #𝗔𝗳𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮: 𝗟𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗦𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗱, 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀 𝗚𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗱 💧 At Uduma, we believe that the key to building sustainable water solutions starts with open conversations, shared expertise, and active collaboration. Last week, we were proud to have our Deputy CEO, Mikael DUPUIS, join global leaders and changemakers in Paris at the OECD-OCDE-AFD - Agence Française de Développement seminar on water and sanitation regulation. We brought to the table our conviction that the quality of water access depends on a sustainable model that combines political will, local stakeholders, and private operators like Uduma. ✔️ Achieving this requires designing a model that promotes economies of scale and ensures profitability without neglecting less profitable areas—particularly by tailoring pricing policies to reflect local realities. By emphasizing these points, we seek to highlight the importance of building a business model that ensures sustainable water access for all, without compromising on quality or equity. #WaterAccess #sustainability

🍁This autumn, UDUMA wasn’t just working hard in the field—we were out there sharing ideas, learning from global experts, and making sure rural water solutions stay in the spotlight! Here’s where we made waves this season: 1️⃣ The Hearth Summit, Thiès, Senegal: Myriam Toguyeni joined African leaders in a discussion about intergenerational well-being and resilience. From reconnecting with cultural roots to imagining a brighter future, this summit was all about building bridges—and inspiring change. 2️⃣ Governing Sustainability Transformations, Netherlands: Georges Mikhael participated in a panel discussion on water risk governance, alongside experts from Oxford, Wageningen, and Amsterdam. Together, they tackled pressing questions about safeguarding water services in the face of climate change, exploring solutions tied to SDGs 6 and 13. It was a chance to exchange ideas and highlight Uduma’s approach to sustainable governance. 3️⃣ UNC Water & Health Conference, USA: Mikael DUPUIS joined global leaders and changemakers at this iconic event to brainstorm practical solutions for clean water and sanitation. The takeaway? Big challenges call for even bigger collaboration. 💡 𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝗨𝗱𝘂𝗺𝗮 𝗷𝗼𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘀𝗲 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀? It’s simple: the best way to drive change is to show up, share, and listen. These moments let us bring fresh ideas back to the communities we serve and ensure we’re always pushing the boundaries of what’s possible for rural water services. Because at the end of the day, it’s all about building a future where everyone has access to safe, sustainable water—and we’re all in this together. #WaterAccess #sustainability #africa

🔸 Is volumetric pricing for drinking water an effective revenue strategy in rural Mali? 🔸   We are delighted to have contributed to this study conducted by Johannes Wagner, Johanna Koehler, Rob Hope and our General Manager Mikael DUPUIS by providing 4,000 monthly payment records across 177 handpumps.   Key takeaways in a nutshell: ✅ Switch from volumetric to flat fees led to three times more monthly revenue. ✅ #Water usage more than doubled under monthly flat fees ✅ Monthly flat fee contributions are more effective in funding professional maintenance services than a volumetric approach, generating on average $9 more revenue per month per handpump. ✅ A subsidy gap persists while flat fees cover a higher share of the operational costs of providing reliable water services   ⏩ Read the full article to learn more about the findings and their implications for sustainable water services and professional service delivery models!   #waterforall #africa #mali #study
