Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield Germany just announced they are strengthening their strategic partnership with sports retailer and manufacturer Decathlon Deutschland, which will open new stores at two of our German shopping centres in the coming months. Westfield Ruhr Park and Palais Vest will welcome new, 1,000+ sqm Decathlon in spring 2025, continuing to enrich each centre’s diverse retail mix. 🚴 🏊 The new stores highlight the Decathlon's strategy of integrating digital and brick-and-mortar retail options, and URW’s ability to offer brands premium locations geared towards immersive shopping and leisure experiences. The latest “How we shop” UK trend report from Westfield Rise, entitled “From Play to Purpose”, highlights three transformative trends reshaping retail and leisure sectors: 1️⃣ Play-Tail: Consumers are craving more immersive shopping experiences. 47% seek entertainment-driven shopping options, with younger shoppers driving demand for playful stores and interactions that elevate retail outings. 2️⃣ Retail Surgery: The desire for convenience is leading to a rise in wellness hubs within shopping centres. 58% of UK adults want health services in retail destinations, showing a shift towards accessible medical, wellness and aesthetic beauty services in non-traditional settings. 3️⃣ Eco-Fluency: With 47% of under-35s turning away from brands without eco-friendly options, transparency in sourcing and sustainable practices is paramount to support informed purchasing decisions. #BetterPlaces2030 Metropole Zličín has new photovoltaics! ♻️ ☀️ ČEZ ESCO has successfully installed a state-of-the-art photovoltaic power plant on the roof of Metropole Zličín. This installation comprises nearly 1,500 panels, generating 650 kW of power and producing 670 MWh of green electricity annually—sufficient to meet the energy needs of approximately 230 households. 🗨️ “Sustainability is a global imperative, and our shopping centers are committed to this cause. By partnering with ČEZ ESCO to construct photovoltaic power plants, we are advancing the sustainable strategy of our parent company, ‘Better Places 2030.’ This initiative aims to progressively reduce greenhouse gas emissions from buildings and minimize the carbon footprint of transportation,” stated Josef Jilemický, Director of Metropole Zličín. 🔜 The photovoltaic installation at Zličín is now fully completed, approved, and pending licensing, expected by year-end. Future plans for the shopping center include expanding the solar power plant by an additional 500 kW, potentially increasing the total installed capacity to over 1 MW. 🗨️ “The Czech economy’s decarbonization is rapidly advancing, with retail spaces playing a significant role. This trend is evident not only in Prague but across other cities as well. Shopping centers, being energy-intensive, benefit greatly from having their own clean energy sources, which support both partial energy self-sufficiency and decarbonization goals. Just six days later, she took centre stage once again, entertaining fans at Westfield Garden State Plaza. We’ve partnered with Vertone to research and better understand what drives the expansion and growth of sustainable retail start-ups in Europe. Using data gleaned from our latest Westfield Grand Prix competition, we analysed almost 200 young retail companies to highlight key trends, challenges and opportunities in the evolving retail landscape. Our key learning: the future of retail is right here – and it's sustainable, innovative and driven by young, female entrepreneurs! 📈 Omnichannel expansion: Retail start-ups are blending online and offline channels to enhance customer engagement and drive growth. On average, they explore new distribution channels after 4-6 years of operations. 🌐 Global reach: Start-ups are expanding internationally. Germany and Austria are leading the way, with 61% of their start-ups selling products internationally. ✅ Sustainability at the core: 85% of start-ups are committed to environmental, social or animal welfare impact. 👩💻 Female leadership: 66% of sustainable start-ups are founded or co-founded by women, and 60% are led by junior entrepreneurs. 🛍️ Consumer education: Transparency and engagement are key for start-ups to build trust and promote responsible consumption. By embracing omnichannel strategies, committing to sustainability and expanding internationally, these start-ups are not only transforming the retail landscape but also setting new standards for responsible business practices. Westfield Rise, our retail media agency, is launching a new AI-powered solution that can measure the drive-to-store impact of advertising campaigns at our European destinations. For the first time, brands can now gauge the performance and effectiveness of their physical ad campaigns and activations with the same precision as they can measure digital advertising. This solution relies on behavioural observation, using image analysis technology developed in partnership with French start-up digeiz. Our team of data scientists have developed algorithms based on artificial intelligence capable of segmenting and analysing visitor journeys in our shopping centres. Leveraging GDPR-compliant data, it allows to measure brand campaigns’ performance by time slot and aggregated visitor profiles, and accurately measure how much store footfall is being driven by a campaign or activation, as well as in-store time. The technology is already deployed across 20 Westfield shopping centres in Europe, empowering brands to: ⚡Target audiences more effectively ⚡Optimise marketing strategies for maximum ROI ⚡Outperform current campaign success rates – brand activations by Westfield Rise currently deliver on average 27% more in-store visits As Westfield Rise turned two this year, this new solution showcases our retail media agency’s commitment to providing brands with data-driven campaigns and actionable insights to evaluate campaign performance, drive footfall, and build meaningful customer engagement.
