🔎 From perceived quality to objective quality Perceived quality is based on customers' judgment, often subjective, leading to frequent debates between customers and suppliers over visual non-conformities. At V-OPTICS, we have seen how shifting from perceived quality to objective quality can transform production processes. Objective quality relies on measurable criteria, eliminating uncertainties and ensuring consistent and reliable defect detection. But achieving this transformation is no small feat. Automating defect detection comes with its own set of challenges and prerequisites: ✅ Define the conformity criteria. Precisely determine what makes a part acceptable or not. Clear definitions are essential for automation to be effective. ✅ Assess the repeatability, reproducibility and consistency between operators and referents. ✅ Set new objectives and associated performance indicators (KPIs), such as reducing over-quality and achieving "zero returns" from customers. Once these foundations have been laid, our experience shows that it becomes possible to successfully roll out an automated inspection tool. By reducing or even eliminating uncertainties, this tool paves the way towards a "right quality" model—striking the balance between over-quality and under-quality. This minimizes the high costs associated with scraps (over-quality) and customer returns or complaints (under-quality), helping manufacturers achieve reliable and consistent results.
