In 2024, Dance Reflections by Van Cleef & Arpels is supporting École des Sables for the third iteration of its African diaspora training program. Located in Toubab Dialaw, Senegal, École des Sables, International Center for Traditional and Contemporary African Dance, is at once a school offering theoretical and practical teaching, a research laboratory, a venue for encounters and sharing, conferences and artistic residencies, as well as a center for creation. Founded in 1998 by Germaine Acogny, reputed as a pioneer in the development of contemporary African dance, and her husband Helmut Vogt, the École has been operating since 2021 under the artistic direction of Wesley Ruzibiza and Alesandra Seutin. Professional training programs are organized on a regular basis, bringing together dancers and choreographers from Africa, the African diaspora and around the world. Dance Reflections by Van Cleef & Arpels and École des Sables first came into contact in 2022. At the time, the initiative was supporting the performance of Pina Bausch’s Rite of Spring by African Dancers in the Grande Halle de La Villette in Paris. Discussions between Serge Laurent, Van Cleef & Arpels’ Director of Dance and Culture programs, and the founders of École des Sables, Germaine Acogny and Helmut Vogt, inspired a decision to support a new training program at École des Sables entitled Diaspora Africa. The training center’s artistic directors, Alesandra Seutin and Wesley Ruzibiza, administer the program. Intended for dancers hailing from Africa, the African diaspora and the Caribbean, Diaspora Africa runs from 2022 to 2024 and comprises three 10-week modules conducted each year over a three-month period. Led by teachers and experts active on the world stage, this training program gives dancers the chance to work on a combined traditional and contemporary repertoire. The choice to support the Diaspora Africa training program at École des Sables represents a milestone in Dance Reflections by Van Cleef & Arpels’ approach to artist development. For the first time, the initiative has looked beyond one-off workshops, embracing a multi-year project. « Support for the Diaspora Africa training program at École des Sables clearly resonates with the values of creation, transmission and education dear to the Maison. It presents a wonderful opportunity to embrace a rich heritage and help disseminate this culture on the world stage.” » Nicolas Bos, President & CEO of Van Cleef & Arpels #VCADanceReflections #VCAdance #VanCleefArpels https://bit.ly/3AK4zY8
