We are very happy to share this post about an instructive use case of the YellowScan Navigator
I wanted to share a flythrough of a green LiDAR point cloud, along with a walkthrough of a series of profile slices, visualizing one of our latest studies—topobathymetric mapping of Faxe Å in Denmark. Over the past few months, I’ve worked with drone-borne Green LiDAR data from different locations in Scandinavia and Southern Europe, but this particular site—a narrow, shallow, and winding stream, heavily overgrown with vegetation—was by far the most challenging to process. Despite the difficulties, the results have been promising and have made me wonder: Are we reaching a point where drone-based green LiDAR could replace traditional stream survey methods in Denmark? Check out the case study here: https://arcg.is/1SKiT10. Would love to hear your thoughts! SpectroFly ApS SeaBee Research Infrastructure YellowScan #greenLiDAR #topobathymetry #UAV

Comprehensive LiDAR Survey for Modeling Pyrenees Avalanche Corridors 🏔️ Challenge 📚 This mission was started in response to a request from the Departmental Directorate of Territories, which lacked LiDAR equipment and therefore outsourced the entire data capture process to drone companies. The objective was to conduct a comprehensive modeling of four avalanche corridors in the Pyrenees, covering a total area of 430 hectares (1 060 ac.) through a LiDAR survey. These areas undergo regular updates to ensure accuracy and relevancy. Their primary requirement was to use a LiDAR system integrated with an M300 RTK, enabling efficient and rapid surveying of the mountainous terrain with its challenging features, such as steep slopes, rugged landscapes, and densely forested areas. The survey spanned 2.3 kilometers (1.4 miles) and featured a maximum elevation difference of 1000 meters (about 3300 ft.), presenting the most challenging section of the project. Mission parameters ⚙️ Survey size: 4 zones totaling 430 ha. (1 060 ac.) Duration: ⏱️ Half a day for flight preparation – decision-making on speed, altitude, double grid or not, takeoff point, GCP placement, backup pivot location for the IGN reference point, etc. Approximately 6 hours of flight time Processing: 1 day for POSPac + YellowScan CloudStation. Number of flights: 7 Speed and altitude: 🚀 Speed of 5 m/s at a height of 120 m AGL. Equipment: YellowScan Explorer LiDAR system. M300 RTK drone. Trimble R4S GNSS receiver + CORS network for control. POSPac software. YellowScan CloudStation with Strip Adjustment module. Using UAV LiDAR for a reforestation project in Indonesia 🌳 Masarang Foundation, a 20-year-old ecological organization founded by world-renowned forester Dr. Willie Smits and based in North Sulawesi, Indonesia, has reforested 35 million trees to date. Challenge 📑 Given the extensive area and moderately challenging terrain, conventional topographic surveys were deemed too time-consuming and costly. To expedite the mapping process, LiDAR was identified as the ideal solution. Furthermore, the pronounced relief of the terrain would have posed significant challenges for ground-based acquisition due to restricted access and risks in certain areas. The project’s aim was also to establish a natural carbon sink while generating food and fuel from the forest, thereby creating a robust economic foundation for the community. Parameters ⚙️ ✅ Survey size: 500 ha (1235 ac) in the Manado area (North Sulawesi) ✅ Duration: Planned for 2 days but the acquisition was completed in one day and from a single take-off point on top of a hill. The processing (classification and DTM) was carried out by the client. ✅ Number of flights: 11 flights Flight speed and altitude: 6,5m/s (14.5 mph) @ 75m (250 ft) AGL – line spacing 135 metres (440 ft) ✅ Equipment: YellowScan Vx15-100 with DJI matrix 600 pro. Tracing the steps of pirates: unveiling their presence in the Indian Ocean ⚓ Business challenge 📑 As part of a project directed by the archeologist Jean Soulat and the association “Archéologie de la Piraterie du XVII et XVIIIème siècle”, two excavation campaigns were organized to find traces of pirates in Mauritius Island and Sainte-Marie island (Madagascar). There were two parts to this project: one with divers and an underwater wreck, and a section on land, with the aim to find information on what the daily life of the buccaneer’s crew was like when they were not at sea. Mission parameters ⚙️ Survey size: approx. 100 hectares (250 ac) Duration: 3 days of flying Number of flights: 15 flights (5 flights per day) Flight height: 20m to 50m AGL (65 to 165 ft) Flight speed: 5-8 m/s (11 mph) – depending on the vegetation cover Equipment: YellowScan Mapper, DPS6 drone, a spectra 60 antenna for the classic RTK Software: CloudStation, Strip Adjustment and Terrain modules. Results 📝 Accuracy: DTM at 15cm (6 in) Point density: average 100 pts/sqm The island’s densely vegetated areas were not ideal for micro-topography. Roughly 75% of the surface was mapped with a density of over 100 points per square meter, which allowed AIRD’ECO-Drone to see if there were any shapes that could be linked to archeology.
