Success story: Mapping Mountainous Regions as Part of Forestry Management Surveys ⛰️ Challenge 🔎 Following a successful research and development collaboration with a government agency, our customer GeoAerospace obtained a contract to perform airborne LiDAR capture in various forestry sites along the secluded west coast of Ireland. Solution ✔️ In response, GeoAerospace was given the task of collecting LiDAR data across multiple sites with their YellowScan Surveyor Ultra. The goal was to generate terrain models and assess the hydrological morphology at each location. To tackle the complexities of the environment and adverse weather, drone surveys using automated terrain-following were used at specific sites. This approach ensured accurate and homogenous data collection as well as analysis under challenging circumstances. Mission parameters ⚙️ Survey size: Several sites – all approximately 300 hectares (750 acres) Duration ⏱️ 1-2 days of flight planning (per site) due to the complexity of access to each take-off and landing point and to secure landowner permissions 1-2 days on site (per site) due to mobilization and access issues to various locations to maintain line-of-sight operations Number of flights: Approx. 8 x 20-minute flights per site Flight speed and altitude: 70m AGL (terrain following via SPH Engineering UgCS) 10m/s Equipment: YellowScan Surveyor Ultra LiDAR system Drone: DJI M300 Trajectory Correction: PPK using CORS station operated by Ordinance Survey Ireland Results 💻 Point density: 200+ points per meter Accuracy: 5cm Digital Surface Model & Digital Terrain Model (5cm GSD) The aerial LiDAR data provided valuable data that would have been challenging to obtain using alternative methods due to the large size and remote, densely forested locations of each site. This data was acquired in a cost-efficient and timely manner. Discover the details of this success story online here: https://hubs.li/Q030kDw40

Success story: LiDAR survey for ecological restoration 🏞️ Challenge 🔎 Our partner L'Avion Jaune is a company specialized in the production of earth observation data (multispectral imagery and LiDAR), is well known by key players in geomatics and environmental management in France. They took part in a study to model the hydrographic network and the hydraulic functioning of a wetland, within a nature reserve in New Aquitaine, France. The hydraulic modeling will facilitate the identification of development possibilities for restoration or functional improvement. The aim is to improve wetland resilience to the impacts of climate change. Parameters ⚙️ Survey size: 1000 ha (2500 acres) Duration: 1.5 hours flight time for acquisition, 3 days processing (POSPac, SA, DTM, Quality control) Number of flights: 2 flights Flight #1: 11 East/West axes Flight #2: 7 East/West axes + 2 North/South axes Flight speed and altitude: 30 m/s at 200 m (650 ft) AGL Equipment: Travel on light aircraft (ICP Savannah S) Software: YellowScan CloudStation with Strip Adjustment and Terrain Modules LiDAR system: YellowScan Voyager Results 🗺️ Point density: 100 pts/m² with 20 pts/m² in ground class Accuracy: Average dz = 1 cm, Root mean square = 5 cm (GCP on natural terrain). The deliverables were for an environmental study: DSM, DTM & DEM at 50 cm resolution. With this LiDAR solution mounted on board their light aircraft, they collected 100 pts/m² in less than 2 hours. Topo-bathymetric case study: underwater artificial reef 🏞️ The City of Cockburn launched a battle against erosion at the beach and an experimental project to protect the beach. A team of researchers from the University of Western Australia (UWA) monitor its effectiveness in a three-year trial. An experimental reef 🌊 "135 precast concrete modules, carefully craned into place 100m offshore and together forming a unique engineered fringing reef, purposefully designed to reduce the energy and intensity of incoming waves, and thereby reducing erosion." Councilmagazine Our partner Sphere Drones organized a demo day in Perth to showcase the potential of the YellowScan Navigator for shallow water mapping. We are delighted to share some views of this artificial reef. Parameters ⚙️ LiDAR system: YellowScan Navigator was used for this topo-bathymetric application over an artificial reef, capturing underwater ground data.
