Common HR Mistakes Made by Foreign Companies in France 🚩 Establishing a presence in France is a strategic step for many foreign companies. However, the specifics of French labor law and local HR practices can quickly become a challenge. Through my experience as an HR expert specializing in supporting foreign companies, I have identified several common mistakes. Here are the most frequent ones: 1️⃣ Neglecting the complexities of employment contracts Permanent contracts (CDI), fixed-term contracts (CDD), probation periods, legal working hours… The complexity of French contracts requires close attention to avoid potential disputes. 2️⃣ Underestimating payroll costs French social charges are often higher than in other countries. Poor anticipation of these costs can heavily impact profitability. 3️⃣ Overlooking the importance of collective agreements In France, collective agreements play a key role in employee rights and complement legal obligations. Failing to integrate them properly can lead to disputes or penalties. 4️⃣ Failing to manage public holidays and specific leave policies France has unique rules regarding public holidays, paid leave, and even systems like RTT (reduction in working time). Mismanagement of these aspects can create internal tensions. 5️⃣ Underestimating the importance of labor relations Social dialogue is a cornerstone in France. Ignoring employee representative bodies (CSE, trade union delegates) can be costly, both in time and effort. How to avoid these mistakes?
