I think today about my obligations to truth and reconciliation as a first generation uninvited guest on Treaty 7 territory. I'm of South African heritage, and my parents left South Africa as a direct result of apartheid, the system of discrimination aimed at subjugating and isolating the Indigenous people of that land. The irony of immigrating to this land and being on the other side of that equation is not lost on me. So - as I continue to educate myself, unlearn the things I was taught in grade school - I reflect on the teaching of Sheila/Siila Watt-Cloutier, who I was privileged to be in conversation with last week, as part of Gowling WLG's NDTR programming. The esteemed Inuk activist and author spoke about reconciliation not just as a path of learning by non-Indigenous folks, but as a fundamental getting out of the way of Indigenous communities as they rebuild their time-tested systems of knowledge keeping, stewardship, and self-government. Although I am indigenous to a land on the other side of the world, I'm under no illusion that my mind is a colonized space - I work every day to be aware of that, and to challenge that internal colonization. The opportunity for us non-Indigenous folks is to practice some cultural humility that includes an acknowledgement that Eurocentric ways of being are not the objective good thing that many of us have been taught. But part of the unlearning is also having a deep curiosity about what Indigenous ways of knowing have to teach us. In the words of Anishinaabe scholar and speaker Jesse Wente in his speech Remembering the Future: "The future that you're imagining has already existed. What we need to do is remember that future. Remember what it was to exist before these systems that are harming us so much."

Dear All: When we are heard we are stronger. Today like tomorrow, the message is clear, hate cannot be accepted and we cannot stay silent. I will go to Ottawa and voice our experiences and make sure that those who can bring legislative change understand the circumstances of what is going on. Antisemitism is a form of racism that dehumanizes and demonizes an entire group of people based on their religion, culture, or ethnicity and it is often a precursor or a catalyst for other forms of discrimination, violence, and extremism. As history has shown, when antisemitism is left unchecked, it can lead to horrific consequences not only for Jews, but for all minorities and vulnerable groups, and for society itself. There is no doubt that the values of Québecois and Canadians are one of peace, inclusion, and tranquility; however, I am saddened to report that public expressions of these values have, since October 7, 2023, been eroded to the effect that many members of our community have experienced intimidation, hate, bullying and aggression because they are Jewish When you do nothing, nothing can happen, but when you do something, you can bring change. One can only imagine the consequences of inaction and that is why we are standing up to be heard. Respectfully Submitted,
********** Spiegel Sohmer congratulates Neil G. O., who has been invited by the House of Commons’ Standing Committee on Justice and Human Rights to appear as part of a panel of witnesses, on May 9, for its study on antisemitism and Islamophobia, as well as additional measures to address the concerns expressed by Canada’s Jewish and Muslim communities. We are proud of his dedication and contributions to this important study.

Debate & Question: Just to awaken the conscience of Blacks/Africans, why when there is a massacre in Africa, (there are deaths), and we often talk about the investigation, we do not take it seriously unless there are Whites/Westerners, who died among the massacred? Does this mean that Blacks/Africans are not human?? Or is it a question of complex?? What we believe to be vanity, often results from an inferiority complex ... True or False?? Everything is complex between a White and a Black, but when everything is public, then the small events of daily life become monuments. Dear Black/African brothers and sisters, who is your hero?? We cannot help everyone, but each of us can help someone.

Every year on February 12, it is the International Day of the Child Soldier, an opportunity for us to reflect on the tragic consequences that this reality causes on children and young people in the DRC, particularly in the East. Thousands of children and young people are recruited willingly or by force into armed groups. Deprived of their childhood, their education and subjected to physical and psychological violence, their future is compromised and their potential is wasted. This day was a special moment to raise awareness among children and young people displaced by war in makeshift camps about this global problem but which constitutes a particular threat to this already weakened, forgotten, unsupervised layer... And who will perhaps no longer have the choice to choose better in this context of war and armed conflicts after all these scourges that he goes through and struggles in the makeshift camps. This is one of the reasons why with displaced children and young people, beyond awareness raising and advocacy, #Shujaa_Initiative aims to provide entrepreneurship coaching to children and young people in makeshift camps in the East of the DR. Congo to give them the toolsnecessary to build a better future for themselves and for our country. We call on the government and partners and anyone of good faith to support these efforts by investing in these displaced children and young people, because this is where the key to a prosperous future for the DRC lies (not least the have as a ticking time bomb). By providing education to these displaced people and stimulating the development of professional skills, we can help break the cycle of poverty and violence by guaranteeing a better future for children. Join and support the efforts made by this initiative in the East of the DRC and the fight for the protection of child soldiers throughout the world. #MtotoApanaAskari Beautiful Trouble Peace Direct Plan International UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency United Nations Volunteers https://lnkd.in/dh-U9j5J

Three weeks after being released from 𝐚𝐫𝐛𝐢𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝐝𝐞𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 in an Iranian prison, where he was held for two years, Louis Arnaud has published a beautiful letter this morning. If you speak French, reading it will undoubtedly bring a smile to your face and restore your faith in humanity (in case it was lost) ! https://lnkd.in/ekiKXXyx ❤️ The cases of Olivier Van de Casteel and Louis Arnaud have recently brought much-needed attention to the issue of arbitrary detention and 𝐝𝐢𝐩𝐥𝐨𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐜 𝐡𝐨𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐬. However, it's crucial to remember the countless others who suffer from different forms of arbitrary detention, often used to: - 𝐫𝐞𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐏𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐎𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 and silence political opponents, journalists, aid workers and dissenters. - 𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐜𝐫𝐢𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐌𝐢𝐧𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐆𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐩𝐬 such as the Uyghurs, Kazakhs, Rohingya, and LGBTQ+ communities - 𝐜𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐤 𝐝𝐨𝐰𝐧 𝐨𝐧 𝐖𝐡𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐥𝐞-𝐁𝐥𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫𝐬: detained under broad and vague national without sufficient evidence. - 𝐦𝐮𝐳𝐳𝐥𝐞 𝐡𝐮𝐦𝐚𝐧 𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐞𝐧𝐯𝐢𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬 in order to stifle their advocacy efforts. 🚨𝐀𝐫𝐛𝐢𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝐝𝐞𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐢𝐬 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐭𝐥𝐲 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐡𝐢𝐛𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐛𝐲 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐡𝐮𝐦𝐚𝐧 𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐬, 𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐥𝐮𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐀𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐥𝐞 𝟗 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐔𝐧𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐚𝐥 𝐃𝐞𝐜𝐥𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐟 𝐇𝐮𝐦𝐚𝐧 𝐑𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐂𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐨𝐧 𝐂𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐥 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐏𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐑𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬. 🚨 Here is a small list of organisations advocating for the release of all those unjustly detained and protect them: @United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention (UNWGAD)https://lnkd.in/eYBShDtk Amnesty International Human Rights Watch (HRW) International Committee of the Red Cross - ICRC Reporters Without Borders (RSF) Freedom House FIDH - International Federation for Human Rights Committee to Protect Journalists Protect Humanitarians Front Line Defenders #HumanRights #ArbitraryDetention #Justice #FreeSpeech #EndDiscrimination #ProtectActivists #InternationalLaw #Advocacy #HumanRightsDefenders
