I never thought I’d be a “mapper” (I doubt many people know what they are!), but here I am. There’s something soothing about gradually wrangling trail lines to align with the bright paths forged by casual Strava users, and making sense of conflicting information sources (and my own memory) of riding these trails. In the GIF you can see a before-and-after view of one of my latest OpenStreetMap (OSM) edits at Maratai Forest where I've added trails and added metadata like names and trail directions. Why is this important? This matters because proper mapping helps everyone make informed and safe choices about where to ride or walk. This information is absorbed into any number of apps and platforms and then onto users. For #AdaptMTB, it’s especially important that cycle barriers are accurately mapped and detailed. These barriers can block access for users of adaptive bikes and a host of other trail users. Knowing where they are and working to make them more accessible, empowers more people to hit the trails with confidence. For trail operators and clubs, the aggregated data from Strava Metro can support trail investment decisions, providing detailed demographics of who is using the trail and when. With Strava Metro’s upcoming 2025 data update, there’s no better time to get involved. As someone passionate about clear wayfinding and public transit, I’ve been noting the negative impacts due to the state of signage at Gare Centrale. Despite the station’s historic significance, its signage has been neglected by its owner, Cominar . I've reached out over two years ago about these issues, and haven't received a response. The signage still prominently displays AMT branding, even though the agency has been exo for years. Connections to exo and REM trains are missing outside the station. Within Gare Centrale, there’s a notable lack of directional signs guiding passengers to the métro. The RÉSO network is another challenge: signage for inter-building connections is virtually non-existent. This makes navigation confusing, and while Halles de la Gare might benefit from increased foot traffic, it comes at the expense of user convenience. After observing these gaps and hearing countless user complaints, I took matters into my own hands. Over the past few months, I’ve personally installed seven signs to help commuters navigate Gare Centrale more effectively. These signs have been in place for over three months, and it’s telling that they’ve gone unnoticed by Cominar , reflecting a broader lack of attention to this vital infrastructure. I strongly recommend that Parks Canada collaborate with the Autorité régionale de transport métropolitain to enhance signage at Gare Centrale. Parks Canada is responsible for overseeing the station's heritage aspects, including wayfinding. They provide guidance and coordination to Cominar regarding station operations. It is imperative that these two government entities collaborate to address the signage-related challenges at Gare Centrale.
