European #CloudServices essential to both public and private sectors – including local governments, hospitals, universities, and commercial businesses – are facing uncertainty and chaos after Broadcom's unilateral decision to terminate all #VMware software licenses on 1 April 2024. With the deadline looming, CISPE (Cloud Infrastructure Services Providers in Europe) members warn that without VMware licenses, or at prohibitive prices, they face bankruptcy. Some rely on VMware technologies to support over 75% of their revenue! This is an impending disaster! Large corporations and public services, as well as SMEs and start-ups, fear they cannot afford to maintain online services based on ubiquitous VMware virtualisation. Emboldened by recent regulatory approvals for the acquisition VMware, and at a time when CISPE members are adopting the requirements for switching and portability between cloud services in the #DataAct, Broadcom is holding the sector to ransom by leveraging the reliance on VMWare’s virtualisation platform and the complexity of switching outside of VMware software to enforce unfair licence terms and siphon outrageous rents from European cloud customers. CISPE urges regulators, legislators and courts across Europe to swiftly scrutinise the actions of Broadcom. At minimum, we call for an immediate pause to contract terminations.
