Reflections on the French Producer Awards and the Unifrance Export Awards – December 16th 2024 Last night, I had the honor of attending the French Producer Awards and the Unifrance Export Awards, two significant events for the audiovisual industry. The evening took place in the stunning setting of the Trianon Palace in Paris, followed by a cocktail reception at the Élysée Montmartre. It brought together producers, distributors, and key players in the industry, yet the atmosphere, while celebratory, carried an undercurrent of unease. The speeches of the evening were filled with terms like “fight” and “battle”, reflecting the current climate of tension. Politically, France is in a state of uncertainty, with a Prime Minister appointed but no government yet in place. This vacuum adds to the anxiety in an industry already grappling with a conjunctural crisis—a term that captures the combined effects of economic, political, and social factors creating instability. This crisis is sparing no one, from small companies to large corporations. Even the winners of the evening’s awards couldn’t hide the weight of the challenges ahead. One of the most striking moments was the speech by jury president Sonia Rolland who pointed out the glaring lack of diversity in the sector. As we approach 2025, this issue remains unresolved. Many attendees approached me and my friend Audrey Kamga during the evening to share their frustration about the lack of progress in diversifying the industry. The challenges brought by this crisis will only make it harder if real change doesn’t happen soon. I had the privilege of speaking with Sonia Rolland who described me as courageous for persevering in this environment. It was a touching moment, but it also left me reflecting: How can we tackle this crisis while ensuring inclusion and representation remain a priority, not an afterthought? 2025 must be the year for the audiovisual industry to redefine itself, embracing diversity, innovation, and resilience to face the road ahead. Representation and inclusion should not be optional—they are essential, especially in times of crisis. What are your thoughts on the future of the industry in such uncertain times? Madrid: A Bridge to Spanish-Speaking Markets Madrid is solidifying its position as a leading hub for content production in Europe, with international co-productions driving its growth. Between 2021 and 2023, 50% of feature films shot in the city were international co-productions, many with Ibero-American countries like Argentina, Mexico, and Peru. This success is bolstered by the Madrid City Council's support, offering €3M in audiovisual aid for production and distribution, with a focus on fostering minority international co-productions. Recent projects include Cerrar los ojos and El llanto, along with series like Santo and Montecristo, bridging European and Latin American industries. With Latin American companies establishing operations in Madrid and strategic partnerships emerging, the city is becoming the go-to hub for Spanish-language content creation and co-production. MUBI , the global streaming platform known for its focus on arthouse and international cinema, has secured a high-profile partner. Chinese billionaire Zhang Xin, founder of Closer Media , has made a significant investment in Mubi and joined its board of directors. Zhang, who transitioned from real estate giant SOHO China to the film industry in 2022, sees this move as an opportunity to align with Mubi’s vision of delivering high-quality, globally resonant content. This collaboration strengthens Mubi’s position in the global streaming market, with its slate of acclaimed releases including Priscilla and Perfect Days and an upcoming lineup featuring works from Kelly Reichardt and Jim Jarmusch. #HowItImpactsTheMarkets Zhang Xin’s investment underscores a growing trend: the convergence of global capital and #niche #storytelling #platforms. As streaming becomes more competitive, platforms like Mubi differentiate themselves by catering to cinephiles seeking diverse, high-quality narratives. With Zhang’s backing, Mubi gains not only financial support but also strategic insight into emerging markets, particularly China, and access to potential co-productions through Closer Media’s connections. This move highlights the increasing globalization of content production and distribution, reflecting a broader shift where regional players and investors are reshaping the future of entertainment. For audiences, this means greater access to diverse voices, and for the industry, it signifies a pivot toward quality over quantity in content strategies. #WhatsNext? Zhang’s entry into Mubi’s leadership could pave the way for more East-West collaborations in film and streaming. Her focus on innovative projects like The Monk and the Gun signals an appetite for storytelling that bridges cultural divides. For Mubi, this partnership offers potential to expand its reach in Asia and enhance its theatrical and streaming ventures. The broader takeaway? As streaming platforms diversify their funding and storytelling sources, we can expect a new era of globally minded, culturally rich entertainment. #StreamingTrends #GlobalCinema #Mubi #ContentInvestment #FilmIndustry
