New study: This week saw the launch of a first-of-its-kind analysis of the economic benefits a cultivated meat sector could offer to Germany and to the EU as a whole.
This work was conducted by Systemiq, funded by and in collaboration with GFI Europe. The report outlines various future scenarios, showing the potential for cultivated meat to drive economic growth, enhance trade, create jobs, and promote environmental sustainability:
🌎 Globally, the cultivated meat market has the potential to reach a value of €510 billion by 2050, with the Asia-Pacific region being the main driver of this growth. In the EU, the cultivated meat market could be worth up to €80 billion in new domestic and export markets by 2050.
📈 In an ambitious scenario, the German cultivated meat market could reach a total value of up to €16 billion, contributing up to €17 billion to the national economy by 2050 (0.4% of the German economy).
👨🔬 According to the analysis, the sector could create up to 90.000 new high-skilled jobs in the EU by 2050, with up to 15.000 jobs to be created in Germany. This projection only includes the direct employment effects.
♻ From an environmental perspective, if the cultivated meat sector grew to this size globally, this would help to mitigate up to 3.5 gigatons of GHG emissions (equivalent to 17% of total 2050 food system emissions).
💶 The report emphasizes the need for substantial investment to unlock these benefits. Globally, the industry requires €55 billion annually between 2024 and 2050 to deliver on its full potential, with €5 billion needed from the EU. Of this, €500 million should come from public funding.
The goal of this analysis is not to provide definitive projections of what will happen, but to illustrate what the economic potential could be to Europe under two ambitious (but plausible) scenarios for the cultivated meat sector’s development. The sector’s ability to reach these milestones will be shaped by whether it has the necessary public and private investment and whether cultivated meat will retain a fair and evidence-based path to market in Europe and globally.
