#disaster #donations #hurricane From a 24 year emergency management coordinator. NOTE, I hold 5 current FEMA certifications but this isn't official. It certainly makes people feel good to collect things and ship them to a disaster area. UNFORTUNATELY MOST OF IT WILL BE DISCARDED You will ignore this because it seems so reasonable to ship goods to a disaster area. But you are actually harming the victims. Used clothing is always sent to a landfill. Food, even canned food, will usually be tossed if not it has to be carefully examined to be certain it hasn't been tampered with or is out dated. In any case canned artichoke hearts are not popular. What happens when such shipments arrive? Volunteers who have better things to do, unpack the shipment and have to go through it all, discarding most of it, but taking up volunteer time and taking dump trucks and warehouse space needed to remove rubble and store useful items. Medicine is ALWAYS discarded but has to be handled as dangerous biological hazards using up even more resources than used clothing and shoes. Donate money to reputable charities like the ASPCA. They are saving pets and that will be good for their families who have lost so much. If you REALLY want to help hurricane victims then try to counter the lies being told to people about FEMA. Conspiracy nuts are frightening people that FEMA will take their homes, FALSE! LIE! Hurting victims. The GOP would be ashamed if they had any conscience but they don't, they just have elected jobs to protect.

L'ouragan Helene, qui a frappé la Caroline du Nord le 25 septembre et a été le deuxième ouragan le plus grave depuis Katrina, a déversé 40 000 milliards de gallons d'eau en peu de temps, provoquant des inondations et des coulées de boue sans précédent, l'eau n'ayant nulle part où aller. Les inondations ont provoqué des dégâts considérables, des villes entières ayant été emportées et plus d'un million de personnes étant toujours privées d'électricité en Caroline du Nord et en Caroline du Sud. Les médias traditionnels ont fait état d’un nombre relativement faible de personnes touchées, mais la réalité sur le terrain est bien plus grave. Comme l’a décrit un média indépendant, la situation est « sans précédent » et « apocalyptique », de nombreuses personnes subissant des inondations et des dégâts d’une ampleur jamais vue auparavant. As you will have followed in the media, Hurricane Beryl has caused widespread damage, destruction, power outages and disruption to water supplies and telecommunications in the South Eastern Caribbean. After hitting Barbados with high winds and storm surge, the hurricane continued its path, causing further damage in Dominica, Saint Lucia, St Vincent and the Grenadines, and more extensively to Grenada. The most severe devastation have been in Grenada’ sister islands of, Carriacou and Petite Martinique, and the Grenadine islands of Union and Bequia. The impact on Jamaica has been less severe than feared, however some parishes, Manchester and St Elizabeth have suffered serious damage.   We wait to hear the read-out this morning from the Cayman Islands where the storm continues to rage.  It is expected to pass within 50 miles of the South of Cayman and to be over by 4pm UK time. The scenes of the devastation across the islands are heartbreaking with many people left homeless, many businesses destroyed, and seven people killed.  Our thoughts and prayers are with all those affected and their families.
