Innovate UK, Let's Fund More Women and grant applicants (winners and non-winners) are beginning to tackle the big frustration: 🐘How to fund more women innovators to commercialise their inventions.🐘 💷MONEY The Women in Innovation Award was a real 1st when it started 8 years ago, and £11 million has been distributed to 200 innovations in that time. Not enough, but a start. Publicly accessible data shows a growing volume of strong scoring projects that sit just below the funding zone. Suggesting that the total fund is too small. It really does need to be a larger fund. I hope these Runners Up all apply for the Smart Grant and get funded that way instead! Though you need to match-fund which not all of them can of course. ✍️EFFORT The grant application process itself needs to work more efficiently and more inclusively. Like many, I have applied for a grant of some kind, and felt the significant loss - of investing weeks of time that should have been focused on my business only to hear I didn’t win. It is gut wrenching. Particularly when the cause is a simple error. A POPULAR IMPROVEMENT So, last week, this week, and for some weeks to come, the key question is “How to improve the Women in Innovation Award?” 50% of the population wants this! 60%+ if you count our male allies! Stella Peace is leading the charge. Well-supported by Emily Nott and David Wilkes and the many voices of the very customers they exist to serve. The innovators. Changemakers. SMEs. Potential Unicorn Entrepreneurs. All of whom underpin the UK Economy. WHAT WILL HAPPEN NEXT? Really excited to see how this unfolds. How much the fund increases by. Lesson No 2 from GITEX AFRICA. THERE IS MONEY LOOKING FOR YOU Are you a founder, a co-founder or an aspiring start-up founder? If yes, you must be worried about funding. Less than 1% of start-ups secure VC funding, according to a 2013 Harvard Business Review. And the headache for any founder is how to solicit a VC for fundraising. In the GITEX, I found an aisle full of health, fintech and climate tech startup stands. Among those who frequented these stands were VCs out to scout for new funding opportunities. While this is not new in the start-up world, it was interesting to witness such a huge African forum where you can pitch your company stand and potential funders will come looking for you. This needs to happen more. Talk of the hunter becoming the hunted, financially.
