🧭 We are in the middle of the desert, where the footprints of where we come from, should inform us on how and where to step next to end the journey. 🖊 The stagnation of progress in malaria control in Sub-Saharan Africa, informs on the unsuitability of using old ways alone in the fights against current problems. 🦟 Mosquito vectors are becoming more resistant to commonly used insecticides, malaria vectors are changing their bitting patterns, there is poor compliance to bed net usage, the invasion of Anopheles stephensi in Africa and climate change are seen and expected to worsen the situation. 🌍 To navigate the present and challenging future, we should act swiftly than mosquitoes' pace. 🌄 New ways are urgently required to address challenges facing malaria vector control. 🦟 The autodissemination of pyriproxyfen approach is one among tools under evaluation that seeks to use mosquitoes as a vehicle for insecticide delivery to their preferred breeding habitats and cause adult emergence inhibition. 🦟 Mosquitoes know better their preferred breeding sites. We can use this behavior to target them.
FORUM: Innovations in mosquito control 🦟 Exciting insights from Ifakara’s Augustino Mmbaga at the National Institute for Medical Research (NIMR) - Tanzania's 32nd AJSC on autodissemination (ATD) for mosquito control! This approach uses mosquitoes to spread specific insecticide at breeding sites, stopping adult mosquito emergence. Showing great promise, what's key now is scalable devices, optimized formulas, and community buy-in. 🌍💡👩🔬👨⚕️ >> https://lnkd.in/eSZbNJZY >> #IFAKARAevents

🐺📊 Last year, DivjaLABS' team completed crucial genetic analysis within the Slovenian national wolf monitoring program run by Zavod za gozdove Slovenije and funded by the Ministrstvo za naravne vire in prostor, shedding light on the status and dynamics of our wolf population. Here are some key findings from the 2022/2023 monitoring season: 🔍 Genetic analysis: We conducted individual genotyping and parentage analysis of noninvasively collected wolf samples, unveiling insightful details about pack structures and dynamics. 🐾 Pack estimations: Our analysis revealed the presence of 17 wolf packs in Slovenia, including one pack of wolf-domestic dog hybrids. Notably, 5 packs have territories straddling the Slovenia-Croatia border. This is an increase of 5 packs from the last monitoring season (2020/2021). 👪 Reproductive success: We confirmed wolf litters in 12 packs, with 8 packs showing consistent reproductive success over previous seasons and 4 packs displaying their first confirmed reproduction in the 2022/2023 season. 📉 Population dynamics: In the season 2022/2023, there were 117 (107-125) wolves in Slovenia (after correction for cross-border animals). While the population growth rate has slowed in recent years, it seems that additional conservation efforts have contributed to stabilizing the population within its newly recolonised areas. 🚫 Challenges ahead: Illegal killings and wolf-dog hybridization remain concerns, warranting continued vigilance and proactive management strategies. 🔬 Scientific foundation: Our monitoring projects provide invaluable insights into pack structures, social dynamics, and long-term population trends, laying a solid foundation for effective management and conservation efforts. 🌿 Looking forward: Despite the favourable conservation status, maintaining connectivity with neighbouring wolf populations is essential for long-term viability. 📄 Full report: For detailed findings, you can access the full report (in Slovenian) here: https://lnkd.in/dcqJnPjC #WolfMonitoring #ConservationSuccess #SloveniaWildlife #BiodiversityInSight #DNA
