What is the difference between EN 397 and EN 12492 chinstraps? 👷♂️ EN 397 – Industrial Safety Helmets Chinstraps are optional for EN 397 helmets. 2-, 3- and 4-point chinstraps can be supplied pre-fitted to the helmet or purchased as an accessory to be fitted by the user, however this is not a mandatory requirement. Optional chinstraps for industrial safety helmets must release under a force of 150 – 250N if caught up creating danger for the user. This reduces the risk of injury in case the strap becomes snagged on machinery in an industrial environment. EN 12492 – Helmets for Mountaineers Chinstraps are mandatory for EN 12492 helmets, forming an integral part of the retention system. All helmets meeting the mountaineering standard are supplied with a chinstrap fitted. The retention system is tested to ensure the strap does not break or stretch when a force of 500N is applied. There are also some test requirements to ensure that the helmet cannot roll off the head if caught at the front or the rear. This maximises protection during a fall, helping to keep the helmet secure in case of repeated impacts from swinging or multiple falling objects.
