Intelligence artificielle et intelligence humaine, l'ère de la complémentarité

Il n'y a aujourd'hui aucun domaine où l'intelligence artificielle ne soit devenue indispensable, que ce soit dans l'industrie, pour construire des machines, dans l'agriculture, pour gérer et surveiller les récoltes, dans l'armée et la police, pour l'utilisation de drones, la médecine hospitalière, pour assister les chirurgiens, la liste est sans limites. Jusqu'où ira notre dépendance et jusqu'où pourrait évoluer cette intelligence artificielle ?

Actuellement, c'est à partir d'algorithmes créés par l'esprit humain que se développent des milliers d'applications, dont l'objectif annoncé est de faciliter la vie des gens, de les délivrer de tâches ennuyeuses et harassantes. On comprend très bien ce que l'homme peut y gagner, mais il est plus difficile de discerner ce qu'il peut y perdre. Car en effet, l'intelligence artificielle donne de grandes espérances pour tous les progrès qu'elle promet de nous offrir, mais elle est aussi source de grandes inquiétudes, relatives aux libertés individuelles. La reconnaissance faciale ou certaines dérives d'Internet n'en sont que quelques exemples.

Déjà les machines travaillent bien plus vite que nous, plus précisément, et sans fatigue. La progression des capacités de l'intelligence artificielle est exponentielle. Des chercheurs ont créé des programmes spécifiquement dédiés au jeu d'échec. Le meilleur de ces programmes a joué contre le champion du monde et l'a battu facilement. Il en en a été de même pour le jeu de go. Plus récemment, il a été organisé un affrontement entre les deux meilleurs programmes d'échec. Pendant le match, les deux programmes ont échangé entre eux, sans intervention humaine. La plupart des habitants de la Terre ont un smartphone, qui n'est rien d'autre qu'un petit ordinateur bourré de technologie, permettant, en plus de l'accès à un maximum d'informations, l'interconnexion avec quasiment n'importe qui. Tout cela est géré par l'intelligence artificielle, qui fait l'interface entre les humains. Certains pronostiquent une révolution aussi importante que la révolution industrielle du 19ème siècle, d'autres vont plus loin encore et annoncent la fin du travail.

Et puis il y a les transhumanistes, qui passent allègrement de l'intelligence artificielle à l'homme artificiel. Selon leur théorie, le contenu d'un cerveau pourra être transféré sur un autre support, téléchargé sur un ordinateur, puis réimplanté dans un corps robotique qui ne craindrait ni la maladie ni la vieillesse. Cela ressemble à de la science-fiction, mais de nombreux chercheurs dans le monde entier travaillent déjà sur cette hypothèse et d'autres qui semblent plus folles et utopiques les unes que les autres.

Il ne faut pas voir de compétition entre l'intelligence artificielle et l'intelligence humaine, la première est issue de la seconde, et lui est complémentaire. L'intelligence artificielle peut représenter une chance exceptionnelle de libération. Comme toutes les machines qui l'ont précédée, dans l'esprit de leurs créateurs, il faut y voir une extension de l'humain, à la fois physique et intellectuelle. Dans les cent dernières années, il y a eu plus de bouleversements scientifiques que dans toute l'histoire de l'humanité, il est donc impossible de connaître son évolution, même assez proche. Ce qui est certain, c'est que la société va être bouleversée, et que les choix qui devront se faire devront être des choix humains.

Artificial intelligence and human intelligence, the era of complementarity

Today, there is no area where the artificial intelligence has not become essential, whether in industry, to build machines, in agriculture, to manage and monitor harvests, in the army and police, to the use of drones, hospital medicine, to assist surgeons, the list is limitless. How far will our dependency go and how far could evolve artificial intelligence ?

Currently, it is from algorithms created by the human mind that develop thousands of applications, the announced objective of which is to make life easier for people, free them from boring and exhausting tasks. We understand very well what humanity can gain from it, but it is more difficult to discern what we can lose. Because in fact, artificial intelligence gives great hopes for all the progress it promises to deliver, but it is also a source of anxiety relating to individual freedoms. Facial recognition or some internet’s problems are just a few examples.

The machines already work much faster than us, more precisely, and without get tired. The progression of artificial intelligence capabilities is exponential. Researchers have created programs specifically dedicated to chess. The best of these programs played against the world champion and beat him easily. It was the same for the game of go. More recently, it has been organized a clash between the two best chess programs. During the match, the two programs exchanged between them, without human intervention. Most of people on Earth have a smartphone, which is nothing but a small computer full off technology, allowing in addition to access to maximum of information, interconnection with almost anyone. All of this is managed by artificial intelligence, which interfaces with humans. Some predict a revolution as important as the industrial revolution of the 19th century,others go even further and announce the end of work.

And then there are the transhumanists, who easily switch from artificial intelligence to artificial man. According to their theory, the contents of a brain can be transferred on another support, downloaded to a computer, then re-implanted in a robotic body that would not fear about to be sick or old. It looks like science fiction but many researchers around the world are already working on this hypothesis and others more or less crazy or utopians.

There should be no competition between artificial intelligence and human intelligence, the first comes from the second, and is complementary to it. Artificial intelligence can represent an exceptional chance for liberation. Like all the machines that preceded it, in the minds of their creators, it must be seen as an extension of the human, both physical and intellectual. In the last hundred years there have been more scientific upset than in the whole history of humanity, so it's impossible to know its evolution,even close. What is certain is that society will be turned upside down, and that the choices that have to be made must be human choices.
