I have been to Wick three times - twice at MacKay’s and once at another hotel. MacKay’s is undoubtedly the better hotel. The hotel has a faded elegance that can be quite charming, and it is certainly a better hotel than Wick deserves with spacious rooms and a great restaurant. However the decor and fittings are a bit old.

Couldn’t be better, the host is a very responsible gentleman who provided perfect service.

Excellent area in Wick for a hotel. Good view of the river and garden. If you are a birder there is a rookery in the church next door and is well worth looking out and hearing for them at roosting time! Rooms were ready for us when we arrived at 2pm which was great and check in was fine. Rooms are quite homely and very clean. Had trouble locating the kettle and cups. Found them in the wardrobe and in a drawer. Bit weird that! Sleep quality was ok. Breakfast was in a pretty uninspiring room with no ambience to it whatsoever. Perhaps a little bit of light music and a few house plants might make it a bit more welcoming. Breakfast was pretty average and the serving girl on the Sunday certainly gave the impression she wanted to be somewhere else, often seen on her mobile phone. All other staff were good. If I was in the area again I would stay again but probably go to the cafe on the High Street instead for breakfast.

The payment for our stay was collected before our stay, which we knew about, what we didn't expect to arrive after a long drive to find no-one to let us in. I have no issues with using a lock box to access a key or follow instructions to gain access. A printed notice on the door said the arrival times which was when we were there. A mobile number was quoted but went straight to voicemail. No other options came to mind so we were about to carry the luggage back down a flight of steps to the car and ask at a hotel If they had a room. At that point a family group came down the stairs inside, they explained how they had received a phone call earlier giving them the location of their keys. We tried it, found a key and let ourselves in. About 10 minutes later we received a call back from the owner who confirmed we were in the correct room, she had tried to ring (possibly once) , had not got through or left a message. As she was tied up with something she had asked/hoped her husband would be there. Next morning at breakfast she apologised again. If the room had been wonderful, it wasn't, I might say it was worth staying. The tiny shower cubicle door didn't fit and floor tiles badly broken, all due to the age of the building.
