Michigan Left Lyrics
[Riff]
[Verse 1]
Driving to work, I had the radio on
Only to hear Curtis Granderson's gone
Reminders they come in empty lots
67' took these city blocks
[Pre-Chorus]
Can we meet in the middle? (Woah, oh)
Can I turn you around? (Yeah!)
Let's talk a little (Woah, oh)
And we can go downtown
[Chorus]
Decorations (Oh, oh)
Won't be wasted, oh no (Oh, oh)
I'll be taking any beauty I see
And I'll try to give it to ya (Oh, oh)
(One time! Woo! Two time!)
[Riff]
[Verse 2]
I said let's not hear that story again
One that's drilled into our heads
I'll hold dear neighbors and friends
Who hold dear ideas of dissent
[Verse 1]
Driving to work, I had the radio on
Only to hear Curtis Granderson's gone
Reminders they come in empty lots
67' took these city blocks

Can we meet in the middle? (Woah, oh)

One that's drilled into our heads
I'll hold dear neighbors and friends
Who hold dear ideas of dissent
[Pre-Chorus]
Can we meet in the middle? (Woah, oh)
Can I turn you around? (Yeah!)
Let's talk a little (Woah, oh)
Or we can go downtown
[Chorus]
Decorations (Oh, oh)
Won't be wasted, oh no (Oh, oh)
I'll be taking any beauty I see
And I'll try to give it to ya (Oh, oh)
[Bridge]
I was confused the day that we met
All I kept hearing is "Michigan Left"
You say those old nicknames
They don't make any sense
He said, "Let me explain" (Oh)
[Chorus]
Decorations (Oh, oh)
Won't be wasted, oh no (Oh, oh)
I'll be taking any beauty I see (Oh, oh)
And I'll try to give it to ya (Oh, oh)
[Outro]
Decorations (Woah. oh)
(Can we meet in the middle?)
(Can we meet in the middle?)
Won't be wasted (Woah oh)
(Can I turn you around?)
(Can I, turn you around?)
I'll be taking any beauty I see (Woah oh)
(Let's talk a little)
And I'll try to give it to ya (Woah oh)
(And we can go downtown)
(I said let's talk a little)
Woah, oh
Woah, oh
Woah, oh
Can we meet in the middle? (Woah, oh)
Can I turn you around? (Yeah!)
Let's talk a little (Woah, oh)

Genius Annotation
Max Kerman has described the song: “If you want to make a left-hand turn, you have to make a right and then a U-turn around the median. That’s what a Michigan Left is. The city of Detroit and Hamilton definitely have some similarities in that they’re rough around the edges, and industrial cities. This song is specifically paying tribute to a family that we know in Detroit that is doing some really incredible community work. The key is trying, not necessarily getting there directly. Sometimes you have to go one way to get to the other way, which is what a Michigan Left is.”
