Perfect Lie Lyrics
Dun, dun, dun-dun-dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun
Dun, dun, dun-dun-dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun
Dun, dun, dun-dun-dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun
[Verse 1]
Neck aches and my back might break
I'm scared of the future like everybody else
Handshakes on a highway that takes us straight to the grave
It's the secret that sells (Shh)
[Pre-Chorus]
Everybody fakes it till they make it
Everybody loves it till they hate it
[Chorus]
La-la-lie, la-la-la-la-lie, I'll sing it till I cry tonight
La-la-lie, la-la-la-la-lie, I'll taste it just the one more time
I'll try to love without hating you
I'll try to blink without losing you
I'll try to leave without missing you
[Post-Chorus]
I can tell a perfect liе
(I can tell a perfect liе)
(I can tell a perfect lie)
Mistakes are the stories that take us straight to the stage
It's the heartaches that sells
Strange brain, take a look at my cage
You'll see, all I care about is feeding myself
[Pre-Chorus]
Everybody fakes it till they make it
Everybody loves it till they hate it
[Chorus]
La-la-lie, la-la-la-la-lie, I'll sing it till I cry tonight
La-la-lie, la-la-la-la-lie, I'll taste it just the one more time
I'll try to love without hating you
I'll try to blink without losing you
I'll try to leave without missing you
[Post-Chorus]
I can tell a perfect lie
I can tell a perfect lie (I can tell a perfect lie)
I can tell a perfect lie (I can tell a perfect lie)
(I can tell a perfect lie)
(I can tell a perfect lie)
[Outro]
Dun, dun, dun-dun-dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun
About
“Perfect Lie” is the 10th and last track off of Ashton Irwin’s solo debut album, Superbloom. Irwin has admitted that this song is about previous songs written with his band, 5 Seconds of Summer. He acknowledges that they are part of his life and his rise to fame, but that he has regrets concerning them. The lyrics of the song suggest that the ideas behind the writing of the songs were manufactured and came from a place of falsehood.

In an Instagram Livestream, he said:
I spoke about it with a interviewer yesterday for Rolling Stone in Australia. It’s about me growing out of songs that I’ve written in the past. In fact, I’m pretty stocked today when I think about this song but, like, a song for instance like “Voodoo Doll” that I wrote with Calum when I was, like, 17 years old or some shit. It’s like, I just don’t dig that song as much as I used to, in the most gentle way possible. We released “Youngblood”, it’s number one for ten weeks in Australia, and my mom says to me “Well, Gotta Get Out is still my favourite.” So we have to play those songs and we honor those songs forever, no matter how old they get. But “Perfect Lie” us me getting my teeth out and talking about the psychological resistance that I’ve felt with in the past in a poetic way, it’s all emphasized and hyperbolized.
On an interview with Thomas Bleach, Ashton confirmed that “Perfect Lie” was the last song he wrote for Superbloom, and then added:
We knew we wanted to make a 10 track record, as we knew that would be enough to introduce people to my solo lyricism, and kinda conceptualise myself through a record like ‘Superbloom’.
