Josie Lyrics

[Instrumental Intro]

[Verse 1: Mark Hoppus]
Yeah, my girlfriend takes me home when I'm too drunk to drive
And she doesn't get all jealous when I hang out with the guys
She laughs at my dumb jokes when no one does
She brings me Mexican food from Sombrero just because

[Pre-Chorus: Mark Hoppus]
Yeah, just because

[Verse 2: Mark Hoppus]
And my girlfriend likes UL and DHC
And she's so smart and independent, I don't think she needs me
Quite half as much as I know I need her
I wonder why there's not another guy that she'd prefer

[Chorus: Mark Hoppus]
And when I feel like giving up
Like my world is falling down
I show up at 3 A.M., she's still up watching Vacation
And I see her pretty face, it takes me away to a better place, and

[Post-Chorus: Tom DeLonge + Mark Hoppus]
I know that everything, know that everything
Know that everything, everything's gonna be fine
I know that everything, know that everything
Know that everything, everything's gonna be fine
[Verse 3: Mark Hoppus]
Yeah, my girlfriend takes collect calls from the road
And it doesn't seem to matter that I'm lacking in the bulge
She laughs at my dumb jokes when no one does
She brings me Mexican food from Sombrero just because

[Chorus: Mark Hoppus]
And when I feel like giving up
Like my world is falling down
I show up at 3 A.M., she's still up watching Vacation
And I see her pretty face, it takes me away to a better place, and

[Post-Chorus: Tom DeLonge + Mark Hoppus]
I know that everything, know that everything
Know that everything, everything's gonna be fine
I know that everything, know that everything
Know that everything, everything's gonna be fine
I know that everything, know that everything
Know that everything, everything's gonna be fine
I know that everything, know that everything
Know that everything, everything's gonna be fine

[Instrumental Bridge]

[Post-Chorus: Tom DeLonge + Mark Hoppus]
I know that everything, know that everything
Know that everything, everything's gonna be fine
I know that everything, know that everything
Know that everything, everything's gonna be fine
I know that everything, know that everything
Know that everything, everything's gonna be fine
I know that everything, know that everything
Know that everything, everything's gonna be fine

About

Genius Annotation

Mark Hoppus confirmed on his Tumblr that “Josie” was written with “an imaginary ideal girlfriend” in mind. When looking for a name, his friend—Elyse Rogers from Dance Hall Crashers, a band mentioned in this song—suggested Josie, the name of her dog.

While “Josie” was the fourth single off of Dude Ranch, it was the second most successful after the classic “Dammit.” The song’s humorous music video features actress Alyssa Milano as the girl he pines for, presumably Josie, and follows Mark’s derailed attempts to win her over.

Wasn't there another music video for "Josie"?
Genius Answer

There was! The original video, which never made it to the public in its entirety, featured the band performing the song in a flooding basement, and was directed by Jason Matzner. A snippet of it can be seen here. Mark revealed in a 2013 Reddit AMA:

I had an idea for the ‘Josie’ video, that we would be the band playing on the deck of an old cruise liner as it sunk. We would play in real time as everything around us exploded in slow motion. Gradually at first, building in intensity, reaching complete catastrophe at the end. People running, sparks flying, superstructure collapsing. The ship floods, and the last shot of the video is the ship sinking into the dark waters as the song ends “everything’s gonna be fine.” The label listened and said “cool, but no. That video will cost millions of dollars.” So the alternative was us playing in a basement and the pipes break. The room floods and we continue playing. We shot the video in the backlot of universal studios on a very cold and long day. I just remember shivering and the water always being shockingly cold every time we had to get in it. Bracing. So cold. The first edit came back and no one was really feeling it, so we scrapped it and started over.
