It’s about lying. It’s about the conflict due to lies and temptation. It was very difficult because the song is in very high pitch.

In an Vlive by RM, one of the members of BTS, he said:

It’s Jimin’s song. This is one of the songs I checked last since I was busy. If you watch the short film, there is the fruit of good and evil. There are many things about lies and truth.

I talked about this song with Jimin recently. I didn’t know Jimin wrote the lyrics. He didn’t work on lyrics or music [for BTS] officially before. He tried many times. He worked with me, too. We do an interview when we first make the songs. The solo songs aren’t simply a concept. It’s not simply a character like “Young Forever” or “Demian” (T/N: The book “Demian” ties in with the main theme of their album, WINGS. Click here to learn more about the connection). We didn’t match ourselves into the character. Our deep worries and troubles in our deepest part. There is a story to all of them. The songs are made by combining “Young Forever” and “Demian”.

Jimin wrote all the lyrics. I didn’t know – it was written so well. Jimin recently told me this. Jimin said he was really happy recently. He’s gotten better and is more relaxed. Before our debut, since we were trainees, he was quite similar to me. he would always blame himself for his own short falling. I’m not good enough, I’m not good enough. I’m doing it wrong, I’m bad. He said he thought like that all the time. “계속돼 도망쳐봐도 / 거짓 속에 빠져있어” (“It continues even when I run away / I am caught in a lie”), “내 웃음을 돌려놔줘” (“Give me back my smile”). Putting one’s self into a corner. We talked about that and agreed a lot.

Jimin told me this story. He thought about his past self while writing. He was deep in lies in the past. “I blamed myself regardless of the truth. I always thought about my flaws and my mistakes. Even if others didn’t, I would blame myself.” He wrote “Lie” while thinking of that time. So, he wrote it after hard work. The producer said it was so well written and goes with the song. He said it would be amazing.

Even now I can’t imagine this song if it wasn’t those lyrics. There is nothing complicated about the lyrics, it’s perfect. I think [through] working on the lyrics, Jimin was able to prove himself once more. It was a step forward. That’s what I think.
