Another Day Lyrics

[Instrumental Intro]

[Verse 1]
Live another day
Climb a little higher
Find another reason to stay

Ashes in your hands
Mercy in your eyes
If you're searching for a silent sky...

[Chorus]
You won't find it here
Look another way
You won't find it here
So die another day

[Saxophone Break]

[Verse 2]
The coldness of his words
The message in his silence
"Face the candle to the wind..."
This distance in my voice
Isn't leaving you a choice
So if you're looking for a time to run away...
[Chorus]
You won't find it here
Look another way
You won't find it here
So try another day

[Bridge]
They took pictures of our dreams
Ran to hide behind the stairs
And said, "Maybe when it's right for you, they'll fall"
But if they don't come down
Resist the need to pull them in and throw them away

Better to save the mystery
Than surrender to the secret, whoa oh

[Guitar Solo]

[Chorus]
You won't find it here
Look another way
You won't find it here
So try another day

[Saxophone Solo]

Genius Annotation

The second track of Dream Theater’s 1992 album Images and Words, and one of the singles from the album. Written by guitarist John Petrucci, “Another Day” is a power ballad about his father, who at the time was diagnosed with cancer, and his message to him telling him to stay strong even in the face of death. However, it has been alternately interpreted to be a song advocating against suicide, though the two meanings aren’t that incompatible with each other.

The music video for this song goes along with the “cancer” theme, showing various MRI scans in the background as well as a father and son talking to each other.

Though intended to be the accessible radio hit, it was Pull Me Under that ended up being the far more popular hit than anyone in the band expected, which resulted in “Another Day” not charting at all, nor receiving any real airplay on MTV that “Pull Me Under” did. However, it’s still a fan-favorite track to this day, being performed live many times over the years, especially early on.

John Petrucci would later write another song about his father, Take Away My Pain from 1997’s Falling Into Infinity, after he eventually passed away due to cancer.
