John Lyrics
I met a man as he walked on the edge of the sky
He gave me the keys to his castle and started to cry
He said, "All of these days that escaped
Have led me to you and I'm suffocating
My last breath that I take I give to you"
Ooh, ah
[Chorus]
"Just don't let me down
It's too late for me, but not for you
You will make me proud
It took more than I could ever do"
[Verse 2]
I stood alone with his words but without his goodbye
And I'll walk the path that he paved if it takes my whole life
I know all of the places I'll go
I'm never alone, but I'm always lonely
Feels like forever ago, but I still hear you
Ooh, ah
[Chorus]
"Just don't let me down
It's too late for me, but not for you
You will make me proud
It took more than I could ever do"
Ooh, ooh, ooh
Ooh, ooh, ooh
[Chorus]
"Just don't let me down
It's too late for me, but not for you
You will make me proud
It took more than I could ever do"
About
“John” is a rock song by musician Jeris Johnson released on March 9th, 2024.
The song seems cryptic, but could be a conversation between John the Baptist and Jesus Christ. The first verse mentions someone meeting a man at the edge of the sky, which could be John talking about Jesus. But, following that, the lyrics talk about someone giving the keys to their castle and crying, talking about how they’re about to die, but when they do die, they’ll give their last breath to the person they’re talking to. This could be Jesus talking about John and the last words that John said to Him. The “castle” could be a reference to the Kingdom of Heaven, referencing Matthew 11:11, but it could also be referencing the historical Castle of St. John the Baptist.
Other than the ambiguous first verse, everything else seems pretty easy to understand. The chorus is Jesus on the Cross talking to John, telling John that He’s going to die and there’s nothing he can do to change that. Jesus tells John that He knows he will make Him proud before dying.
The second verse is John talking about how he feels lonely while he follows Jesus' paved path. He knows Jesus is always with him, but despite that, he can’t see Him, so he feels lonely.
With the possibility that the song is explained, this explanation marks the song as fiction, because John was killed via beheading during Jesus' ministry, meaning he couldn’t have seen Jesus' crucifixion.
Official Meaning (PilotBeLike Suggestion): When Jeris Johnson was asked about the song by Octane. He responded by telling the story of when he got his second drum set. His father found a man on Craigslist who was selling his old drum set. Jeris went to the house and bought the drum set. Flash forward to Christmas Eve; John (the man he bought the drums from) appeared at the door step with the rest of his drum things. Jeris never saw him again. He wrote the song almost as a type of honor and memory.
