Listen Lyrics
[DEENA]
Listen
And I'll try to do the same
To take my share of blame
For what went wrong
Listen
To the girl you used to know
The one who loved you so
For oh so long
I can hear our voices ringing in my head
Two girls laughing, singing on the bed
You'll hear them too
All you need to do
Is listen
Listen
Open your heart and forgive me
Give what I need you to give me
Give me Effie back
I need my Effie back
Please, sister, please
Oh
I have been so all alone
Oh, won't you help me Effie?
I lost myself, now I can't see
Who it is I'm supposed to be
No, I just don't know
Listen
And I'll try to do the same
To take my share of blame
For what went wrong
Listen
To the girl you used to know
The one who loved you so
For oh so long
I can hear our voices ringing in my head
Two girls laughing, singing on the bed
You'll hear them too
All you need to do
Is listen
Listen
Open your heart and forgive me
Give what I need you to give me
Give me Effie back
I need my Effie back
Please, sister, please
Oh
I have been so all alone
Oh, won't you help me Effie?
I lost myself, now I can't see
Who it is I'm supposed to be
No, I just don't know
[EFFIE]
Listen
To the girl you used to know
The one that loved you so
Back in the day
Oh, Deena, girl
I know what you're going through
I got through it and you can too
Now it's your turn
You've got to learn
To listen
Listen
There is a voice deep inside you
This is the voice that will guide you
To where you need to be
It will set you free
Take it from me
Oh
It's a long and lonely road
But girl, you've gotta take it
It's gonna hurt like hell today
But trust me girl, that'll go away
It goes away
Listen
To the girl you used to know
The one that loved you so
Back in the day
Oh, Deena, girl
I know what you're going through
I got through it and you can too
Now it's your turn
You've got to learn
To listen
Listen
There is a voice deep inside you
This is the voice that will guide you
To where you need to be
It will set you free
Take it from me
Oh
It's a long and lonely road
But girl, you've gotta take it
It's gonna hurt like hell today
But trust me girl, that'll go away

Genius Annotation
Originally Beyoncé’s song for the character Deena Jones in Dreamgirls’s 2006 film adaptation, “Listen” was rewritten for the stage musical’s West End production with new lyrics by Henry Krieger and Willie Reale and was reimagined as a duet with Effie White. This song replaces an unnamed number after “Faith in Myself” and takes place at the musical when Effie reunites with Deena and convinces her to leave her controlling husband and manager Curtis, diverging from the original version of Dreamgirls in which Deena does it on her own.
