The song is about Lily Allen’s miscarriage and the emotional trauma that followed from realising that her baby George had died.

In October 2010, Lily Allen was admitted to hospital 28 weeks into her pregnancy, as she was technically in labour. Hospitals were able to delay her giving birth for a week and a half, but she started crowning and the midwife realised George was already dead. Lily had to carry on pushing the baby out for ten hours.

Following the miscarriage, Lily contracted septicaemia. In her memoir My Thoughts Exactly, she described her routine in the months following:

I’d go to bed with Sam and I’d wait for him to go to sleep. Then I’d go down to the kitchen, open a bottle of red wine and drink it while smoking a packet of cigarettes. I remember feeling numb, so numb. And doing whatever that version of crying is when you don’t make a sound but become sodden with constant tears.

Years later, she was diagnosed with post traumatic stress disorder from the miscarriage.
