Stay Awake Lyrics
I am the blank page before you
I am the fine idea you crave
I live and breathe under the moon
And when you cross that bridge
I'll come find you
[Chorus 1]
Stay awake with me
You know I can't just let you be
Stay awake with me
Take your hand and come and find me
[Verse 2]
I don't have a skin like you do
To keep it all in like you do
I don't have a soul like you
The only one I have
Is the one I stole from you
[Chorus 2]
Stay awake with me
You know I can't just let you be
Stay awake with me
Take your hand and come and find me
Stay awake with me
You know I can't just let you be
Stay awake with me
Take your hand and come and find me
About
“Stay Awake” is the second song on London Grammar’s first full studio album titled “If You Wait.”
“Stay Awake” is a stand out song on it’s album. London Grammar creates a gloomy mood for the listener, entering with slow continuous guitar masked with the intensity created by the loose top head and the drumming skills of Dominic Major. This paired with the deeper female voice of Hannah Reid creates an atmosphere unmatched by the later songs on the album.
The gloomy mood is accompanied, and emphasized by, the hopeful message of two lovers who have been split. Although the two are in love, they had made numerous attempts to repair the broken relationship but they had grown tired.
When Reid sings the line “Stay awake with me – you know I cant just let you be” she believes that her former partner is still in love with her. She believes that love is worth fighting for and wants to hold on to him.
“Take your hand and come and find me” She wants to know that the man she loves will fight for her and work to renew their once great relationship.
When Hannah Reid sings “I don’t have a soul like you – The only one I have – Is the one I stole from you” She speaks to the fact that she was incomplete without him (lacking a soul) and she feels completed around him. Another possible meaning for this lyric is that she knows that he is in love with her and what she stole from him was his heart.
The song ends hopefully, hoping that the man will fight for his love and not let it fade away.
