Merle Haggard is an American country singer from California, born on April 6th, 1937. Haggard was rebellious in his youth and eventually had a criminal record for his juvenile delinquency.
This song was the first track on the album titled “A Portrait of Merle Haggard” that was first released in 1969.
He was acquainted with Johnny Cash during the time he spent as an inmate at San Quentin State Prison, where Cash played his first prison concert in 1958. The young Merle Haggard was in the audience and this show is what guided him toward the path of becoming a country singer.
Johnny Cash also did a cover of Haggard’s song that was featured on The Best of Johnny Cash TV Show, on air from 1969-1971:
