We can never be friends
[Chorus]
I hate that I saw you again last night
You were with somebody and so was I
Met you in the bathroom at 12:05
And I fucked you again, we can never be friends, yeah, yeah, yeah
[Verse 1]
I'm not myself
I'm not myself when you're around, no
Can't be helped
We are insane, that's just the way it goes
[Pre-Chorus]
I'm a demon in the night, she's an angel with the white
Told me, "Keep on all the lights, I'ma show you what you like"
Help you put back on your clothes, make sure nothing's on your nose
Ain't even tell my closest homies, nobody knows
[Chorus]
I hate that I saw you again last night
You were with somebody and so was I
Met you in the bathroom at 12:05
And I fucked you again, we can never be friends, yeah, yeah, yeah
I couldn't cry (Couldn't cry)
I need to smoke, I'm feelin' sick inside (Sick inside)
From seein' you next to a friend of mine
We didn't speak, but I read your mind
Both tellin' lies, our alibis didn't work this time (Didn't work this time)
[Pre-Chorus]
I'm a demon in the night, she's an angel with the white
Told her, "Keep on all the lights, you can show me what you like"
Help me put back on my clothes, make sure nothing's on my nose
Can't even tell my closest homies, nobody knows
[Chorus]
I hate that I saw you again last night
You were with somebody and so was I
Met you in the bathroom at 12:05
And I fucked you again, we can never be friends, yeah, yeah, yeah
[Post-Chorus: Machine Gun Kelly & Goody Grace]
We can never be friends, yeah, yeah, yeah
We can never be friends, yeah, yeah, yeah
We can never be friends, we can never be friends, yeah, yeah, yeah
[Bridge]
Yeah, I know that I said I was at home
Okay, yeah, you caught me (Caught me)
I thought that you said you were all alone
Look at you lying
I hate that I saw you again last night (I hate that I saw you again)
You were with somebody and so was I
Met you in the bathroom at 12:05
And I fucked you again (And I), we can never be friends, yeah, yeah, yeah
[Outro: Machine Gun Kelly & Goody Grace]
Oh, we can never be friends, yeah, yeah, yeah (Yeah)
We can never be friends, yeah, yeah, yeah (Yeah, yeah)
We can never be friends, we can never be friends, yeah, yeah, yeah
About
On “why are you here,” Machine Gun Kelly continues to explore his diversity, taking a pop-punk approach to discuss his ongoing relationship with an ex-partner. On the guitar-driven track, Kelly details a night he coincidentally runs into his ex and got intimate with her, concluding they “can never be friends.”
The track is Kelly’s first release since deciding his next album would be completely composed of singing and live instruments, a strong difference from the hip-hop career that led to his success.

During Machine Gun Kelly’s conversation with Zane Lowe following the release of “why are you here” on Beats 1, MGK spoke about his upcoming album:
It was probably this song, to be honest, that was the transfer to me as far as being like, ‘I want my next project to be all singing, all live instruments.’ This was right before I got in the studio with Travis [Barker].
He continued by talking about the origins of the song:
I walked into a party one time with this girl that I guess I was kinda creepin' with while I was talking to this other girl, and I walked in and the other girl that I was lying to was in the party and she was lying to me. So I was there with somebody and she was there with somebody. And I didn’t really know I would be affected by it until I saw it with my own eyes.
The night before the song released, MGK took to Twitter to tease fans before eventually revealing the track’s title.
The song was released on New Music Daily on Beats1 Radio with Zane Lowe at noon EST the next day.
