This Time Around Lyrics
Ah, ah, ah, ah (Hoo!)
A-lacka-lacka-lacka
A-lacka-lacka-lacka-lacka-lacka-lacka
Uh, ah
[Verse 1: Michael Jackson]
This time around, I'll never get bit
Though you really wanna fix me, uh (Ah)
This time around, you're makin' me sick
Though you really want to get me (Ah)
Somebody's out, somebody's out to get me
They really want to fix me, hit me (Uh)
But this time around, I'm takin' no shit
Though you really want to get me
You really want to get me
[Chorus: Michael Jackson]
He really thought he really had a hold of me
He really thought (They thought they really had control of me) he really had control of me
He really thought he really had a hold of me
He really thought (They thought they really had control of me) he really had control of me
[Verse 2: Michael Jackson]
This time around, I'll never get bit
Oh, you really want to get me (You really want to get me)
But this time around, I'm takin' no shit
Though you really want to fix me (Uh, you really want to fix me)
Somebody's out, somebody's out to use me
You really to use me and then falsely accuse me (Accuse me)
This time around, they'll take it like spit
Though you really can't control me (Uh, you really can't control me)
You know you can't control me, ugh
He really thought he really had a hold of me
He really thought (They thought they really had control of me) he really had control of me
He really thought he really had a hold of me
He really thought (They thought they really had control of me) he really had control of me
He really thought he really had a hold of me (Woah, get me, and fix me)
He really thought (They thought they really had control of me) he really had control of me (Woah, woah)
He really thought he really had a hold of me
He really thought (They thought they really had control of me) he really had control of me
[Verse 3: The Notorious B.I.G. & Michael Jackson]
Listen, I got problems of my own (Uh)
Flashin' cameras, taps on my phone (Uh-huh)
Even in my home, I ain’t safe as I should be
Things always missin', maybe it could be (Uh)
My friends, but they ain’t friends if they robbin' me
Stoppin' me, from makin' a profit, see
Apology shallow like the ocean (Uh-huh)
I guess I'll resort to gun-totin'
If I was dead broke and smokin', I'd probably be by my lonesome
I'ma kill a nigga, I ain’t joking, Indo smoke got me chokin' (Uh)
I'm hopin' a fool come slippin', so I can blow him open
This time around, I changed up my flow (Uh-huh)
Got rid of the Rotts, got Pits by the door (Uh)
A real set of peoples to watch my back (Uh-huh)
Stay away from strangers so I won't slack
And I know my nigga Mike like that, baby (This time around, yeah)
He really thought he really had a hold of me
He really thought (They thought they really had control of me) he really had control of me
He really thought he really had a hold of me
He really thought (They thought they really had control of me) he really had control of me (Get me, fix me, he really had to get me)
He really thought he really had a hold of me (Accuse me, abuse me, nobody's gon' abuse me)
He really thought (They thought they really had control of me) he really had control of me (Take me, shake me, nobody's gonna break me)
He really thought he really had a hold of me
He really thought (They thought they really had control of me) he really had control of me (Killed me, guilt me, hell, like the way you—)
Control this here
[Outro: Michael Jackson]
(Woah) He really— (Woo)
He really— (Woah)
He really thought— (Abuse me, accuse me, nobody gon' accuse me)
(Woah) He really thought— (Evict me and wish me, nobody's gonna dish me)
He really thought—
(Woo!) This time around, yeah
He really thought—
About
From the album HIStory, an uncharacteristically aggressive song, with vocals to match.
When Michael Jackson started hanging around Jordan Chandler, the boy at the center of the 1993 child molestation allegations, his estranged father, Evan, quickly made moves to get back into his son’s life, mainly to get favors from Jackson. When Jackson’s relationship with the Chandlers, particularly Evan, deteriorated around mid-1993, Evan then attempted to privately extort Jackson with the accusations, before eventually going public with them just as Jackson began the third leg of his Dangerous world tour.
Jackson denied the allegations, and was never charged, but ended up settling a civil suit with the Chandlers in 1994, due to essentially being railroaded into having a civil suit take place before a criminal one, which would’ve jeopardized his right to a fair criminal trial. Tellingly, despite the settlement still allowing for a criminal trial to go forward, the Chandlers stopped cooperating with the police after the settlement, and Thomas Sneddon, the allegedly biased District Attorney on the case whom Jackson also had choice words for, saw to it that Californian law was changed so a civil trial couldn’t go ahead of a criminal one – a change that eventually got Jackson tried by jury in 2004 on similar charges, but ironically may have played a role in his acquittal.
After the civil suit settlement, Jackson began recording sessions for what eventually became HIStory, and wrote and recorded “This Time Around” in response to Chandler’s actions, and not only subliminally dissed Evan Chandler, but made it clear he wasn’t going to be taken advantage of again. Evan would attempt to sue Jackson again for breaching the settlement’s confidentiality agreement with HIStory, but the case was thrown out.
Jackson reached unparalleled heights in his music career, hence the hysteria around his life, and the many people who repeatedly tried to rip him off. Notorious B.I.G can relate to this, and drops a verse about how they both share similar problems.
Despite only making average sales by Jackson’s standards, HIStory pushed 20+ million copies – a top 100 in all time album sales.
