Chelsea Girls Lyrics
Here's room five-four-six
It's enough to make you sick
Brigid's all wrapped up in foil
You wonder if she can uncoil
[Chorus]
Here they come now
See them run now
Here they come now
Chelsea girls
[Verse 2]
Here's room one-fifteen
Filled with S&M queens
Magic marker row
You wonder just
How high they go
[Chorus]
Here they come now
See them run now
Here they come now
Chelsea girls
[Verse 3]
Here's Pope, dear Ondine
Rona's treated him so mean
She wants another scene
She wants to be
A human being
Here they come now
See them run now
Here they come now
Chelsea girls
[Verse 4]
Pepper, she's having fun
She thinks she's some men's son
Her perfect loves don't last
Her future died
In someone's past
[Chorus]
Here they come now
See them run now
Here they come now
Chelsea girls
[Instrumental Break]
[Verse 5]
Dear Ingrid's found her lick
She's turned another trick
Her treats and times revolve
She's got problems
To be solved
Here they come now
See them run now
Here they come now
Chelsea girls
[Verse 6]
Poor Mary, she's uptight
She can't turn out her light
She rolled Susan in a ball
And now she can't
See her at all
[Chorus]
Here they come now
See them run now
Here they come now
Chelsea girls
[Verse 7]
Drop out, she's in a fix
Amphetamine has made her sick
White powder in the air
She's got no bones
And can't be scared
Here they come now
See them run now
Here they come now
Chelsea girls
[Verse 8]
Here comes Johnny Bore
He collapsed on the floor
They shut him up with milk
And when he died
Sold him for silk
[Chorus]
Here they come now
See them run now
Here they come now
Chelsea girls
[Chorus]
Here they come now
See them run now
Here they come now
Chelsea girls

The song was written by Lou Reed and Sterling Morrison of the Velvet Underground, who Nico had collaborated with for their debut album the previous year.
The title of the song is a reference to the 1966 film of the same name by Andy Warhol, which Nico starred in herself. The film was an experimental reality movie that focused on the various residents of the Hotel Chelsea during Warhol’s Factory days. Many of them were Bohemian artists, drop outs, and drug addicts, which is also described in the lyrics of the song, and also referred to are turning tricks, heroin, S&M, amphetamine and silver foil.
Running at just under seven and a half minutes long, “Chelsea Girls” is similar in style to a ballad, telling the stories of various residents at the hotel. It features guitar work from both Reed and Morrison, who wrote the song together, as well as a flute and string section, both of which are prominent throughout the song.
Nico stated in interviews that she “hated” the flute, but had no say in the matter because it was in the hands of Tom Wilson, who produced the album.

“I still cannot listen to it, because everything I wanted for that record, they took it away. I asked for drums, they said no. I asked for more guitars, they said no. And I asked for simplicity, and they covered it in flutes! […] They added strings and – I didn’t like them, but I could live with them. But the flute! The first time I heard the album, I cried and it was all because of the flute.” -Nico
