This song is remembering younger days. Days when Pat passionately believed in his Anarcho/Communist ideas. He was just about ready to die for them. Then, at some point, he grew up and realized that he does not care as much as he thought he did. It was getting late in life and he had nothing. This is clearly shown in the chorus:
