Money (A Collection of Great Dance Songs Re-Recording) Lyrics
[Verse 1]
Money, get away
You get a good job with more pay and you're okay
Money, it's a gas
Grab that cash with both hands and make a stash
New car, caviar, four-star daydream
Think I'll buy me a football team
[Verse 2]
Money, get back
I'm alright, Jack, keep your hands off of my stack
Money, it's a hit
Ah, don't give me that do-goody-good bullshit
I'm in the high-fidelity first class travelling set
And I think I need a Learjet
[Saxophone Solo]
[Guitar Solo]
[Verse 3]
Money, it's a crime
Share it fairly, but don't take a slice of my pie
Money, so they say
Is the root of all evil today
But if you ask for a rise, it's no surprise
That they're giving none away
Away, away, away
Away, away, away
Away, ooh...
About
When Pink Floyd were compiling their 1981 “beginner’s guide” compilation A Collection of Great Dance Songs, they found themselves butting heads with their old US distributors, Capitol Records, over the track “Money”. Capitol owned the US rights for the studio version heard on The Dark Side of the Moon, and refused to license it out to the band’s new US label, Columbia Records.
Consequently, David Gilmour re-recorded the song himself with the assistance of producer James Guthrie. Gilmour plays every part on this rendition with the exception of the saxophone, recorded by Dick Parry (who played on the original 1973 version as well). Despite this, the track is still credited to Pink Floyd despite technically being a Gilmour solo recording.
