About
Thematically, this obscure Radiohead “Street Spirit” B-side seems to follow the ideas of the one preceding it, Banana Co. Its lyrics, while on the surface a seemingly random assortment of phrases and images, carry heavy themes of neo-colonialism, and atrocities.
Molasses is “a viscous substance resulting from refining sugarcane or sugar beets into sugar.” The song’s titular substance points to the sugar trade, which is often associated both with colonialism, and the unbridled pursuit of profit as done by First World countries upon Third World ones.
Recorded in early September 1995 during a session which also produced ‘Lucky’. It has never been played live and never mentioned by the band in interviews.
