Everybody Hurts Lyrics

[Verse 3]
If you're on your own in this life
The days and nights are long
When you think you've had too much
Of this life to hang on

[Chorus]
Well, everybody hurts sometimes
Everybody cries

Everybody hurts, sometimes
And everybody hurts sometimes

[Outro]
So hold on, hold on
Hold on, hold on, hold on
Hold on, hold on, hold on
Everybody hurts
No, no, no, no, no, you're not alone

About

Genius Annotation

“Everybody Hurts” seems kind of saccharine and overly heartfelt because it was meant to be. In an interview, Michael Stipe mentioned that the song was meant to be a genuine message to the band’s teenage fans that, no matter how bad your life may seem, to please keep hoping for a brighter day.

A note regarding composition: this song has strong similarities to “Rock'n'Roll Suicide”: Compare the notes that begin “Everybody Hurts” to the guitar figure that starts with Bowie singing “You’re too old to lose it”. Likewise, both songs ascend into a coda with the lyrics “You’re not alone”.
