“number one girl” is the second single of ROSÉ’s upcoming solo debut album, rosie. The track was first teased on an Instagram live ROSÈ did with her producer, Teddy Park, who has also worked on many songs for BLACKPINK such as “How You Like That”, “뚜두뚜두 (DDU-DU DDU-DU)”, and “Kill This Love”.

Lyrically, the song talks about a desire for love and constant validation from other people. ROSÉ confesses that she’d do anything to be the “number one girl” in this person’s eyes.

The song is more vulnerable and honest compared to the singer’s previous songs. In an interview with Paper Magazine, ROSÉ explained how the song came to be:

I realized how vulnerable and addicted I was to this [online] world and that craving for feeling like I wanted to be loved and understood. I hated that about myself. [I decided to write a song that’s] so disgustingly vulnerable and honest that people learn that I am a person that goes through these emotions, and I hated that about myself. If anything, it’s something I want to cover up. Even in interviews, I’m like nothing really fazes me, you know? But it does. Every word, every comment, it crushes me.
