About
“Pretending” was the only track on Oil Of Every Pearl’s Un-Insides that hadn’t been performed at SOPHIE’s live debuts in LA, New York, and London. It is notably the only track whose full version was unheard by fans prior to the album’s release, since only a snippet was played at her set at Form. While another track was initially thought to be “Pretending,” it turned out to actually be the latter half of “Whole New World/Pretend World”, which interpolates the same demo that “Pretending” remixes.

In an interview for Jezebel, SOPHIE said:
“Pretending” was made from a song I wrote called “Pretending,” which was a full song with lyrics and vocals and everything. And then I just thought it was a bit too literal. When I really manipulated it and extended it, I felt it kept the sentiment of the song without being so literal. I suppose that’s what I try to do, generally speaking.
