Light Years Lyrics

[Verse 1]
You were waiting outside for me in the sun
Laying down to soak it all in before we had to run
I was always ten feet behind you from the start
Didn't know you were gone 'til we were in the car

[Chorus]
Oh, the glory of it all was lost on me
'Til I saw how hard it'd be to reach you
And I would always be lightyears, lightyears away from you
Lightyears, lightyears away from you

[Verse 2]
I thought I saw your mother last weekend in the park
It could've been anybody, it was after dark
Everyone was lighting up in the shadows alone
You could've been right there next to me, and I'd have never known

[Chorus]
Oh, the glory of it all was lost on me
'Til I saw how hard it'd be to reach you
And I would always be lightyears, lightyears away from you
Lightyears, lightyears away from you
Lightyears, lightyears away from you
Lightyears, lightyears away from you

About

Genius Annotation

“Light Years” is the closing track and second single from The National’s eighth album, I Am Easy To Find. It was premiered live before its release on April 29, 2018, during the second night at the band’s own Homecoming Festival, in Cincinnati.

In an interview with NME on April 27, 2018, Matt Berninger told that the band “have been recording wherever they went”:

We’ve been in the studio. We’ve been recording wherever we go. We had a bunch of stuff that we just recorded in Buenos Aires when we were in South America just because we had a day or so. We’ve been constantly just writing. Even before Sleep Well Beast was done, there was already a bunch of stuff cooking, but when Trump won it just didn’t feel right for whatever reason. I can’t even tell you why. Sleep Well Beast had the pivot when the world changed. We stayed in the kitchen. We don’t do that thing where we don’t talk to each other for months anymore. I don’t know what form or when this next album is going to come out, but we’ve been doing some other really interesting collaborations with people too. It’s all way more than halfway done.

What did The National say about "Light Years"?
Genius Answer

Matt Berninger in an interview with BBC Radio 6 Music:

I remember there was the chorus, there was a book by Sean Wilsey called “Oh the Glory of It All” – I stole the whole title of that. It was on the shelf in Carin’s library where she keeps all her books. “Light Years” by James Salter was also on the shelf and somehow the chorus of that just got pieced together from those two titles. The rest of it is all about just feeling distant from somebody on a different orbit – people who love each other but don’t understand each other."

Aaron Dessner in an interview with Pitchfork:

That song was connected to grief. I wrote the music after my wife’s mother had been diagnosed with cancer. She was in a very swift decline, so we moved to Denmark [to be with her]. There was this beautiful old Swedish piano in the house we rented where I wrote this and “Carin at the Liquor Store” [from Sleep Well Beast]. I sent it to Matt, and it was one of those ones that just clicked. He sent the song back a day later."

Matt Berninger in an interview with Pitchfork:

Aaron writes stuff, and a lot of it can be academic, but sometimes it comes purely from an emotional place. With “Light Years,” you can tell whatever’s on that piano is 100 percent pure liquid emotion. When I get one of those, it’s easy to go into that same water."
