Just Be Good to Me Lyrics

[Verse 1]
Friends tell me I am crazy
That I’m wasting time with you
You’ll never be mine
That's not the way I see it
‘Cause I feel you’re already mine
Whenever you’re with me

[Chorus]
People always talking 'bout "reputation"
I don’t care about your other girls
Just be good to me
Friends are always telling me you’re a user
I don’t care what you do to them
Just be good to me

[Verse 2]
You may have many others
But I know when you’re with me
You are all mine
Friends seem to always listen
To the bad things that you do
You never do them to me

[Chorus]
People always talking 'bout "reputation"
I don’t care about them other girls
Just be good to me
Friends are always telling me you’re a user
I don’t care what you do to them
Just be good to me

[Hook]
La, la, la, la, la, la, la, la
La, la, la, la, la, la, la, la
Just be good to me

[Interlude]

[Verse 3]
Life is a game of chances
So I’ll take my chance with you
And you, I won’t try to change
We've talked about it, and
I'd rather have a piece of you
Than to have all of nothing

[Vamp]
But just be good to me (In the morning)
Just be good to me (In the afternoon, or evening, oh yeah)
Just be good to me

I’ll give you love, I will smother you
I’ll give affection, I won’t bother you
I’ll be good to you, you’ll be good to me, yeah, yeah
Just be good to me

I'm not the jealous type
I won't tie you down
When you need me, I’ll be around
I’ll be good to you, you’ll be good to me
And we’ll be together, be together
[Hook]
La, la, la, la, la, la, la, la
La, la, la, la, la, la, la, la
Just be good to me
La, la, la, la, la, la, la, la
La, la, la, la, la, la, la, la
Just be good to me

La, la, la, la, la, la, la, la
La, la, la, la, la, la, la, la
Just be good to me
La, la, la, la, la, la, la, la
La, la, la, la, la, la, la, la
Just be good to me

La, la, la, la, la, la, la, la
La, la, la, la, la, la, la, la
Just be good to me
La, la, la, la, la, la, la, la
La, la, la, la, la, la, la, la
Just be good to me

La, la, la, la, la, la, la, la
La, la, la, la, la, la, la, la
Just be good to me
La, la, la, la, la, la, la, la
La, la, la, la, la, la, la, la
Just be good to me

[Ad-Libs]
I love you so
Be nice to me, be sweet to me
We won’t worry, no, no, what other people say
We’ll be good to each other
Ooh, each and every day
I’ll be good to you
You’ll be good to me
We will love each other
Ooh, yes, we will
Just be good, ooh

About

Genius Annotation

“Just Be Good To Me” was a hit single released by The S.O.S. Band in 1983. Lead vocals were handled solely by Mary Davis. The single did well on the Billboard charts reaching #2 at R&B, #3 at Dance, and #55 on the Hot 100.

Lyrically, the song describes a woman who appears determined to stay in a relationship with her admittedly unfaithful boyfriend. However, in a more modern context, the song seems to describe a woman agreeing to a polyamorous relationship where multiple partners are accepted and sometimes even shared.

Producers Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis were moonlighting on their gig as keyboardist and bassist in funk band The Time. While working on the song in Atlanta, GA, a snowstorm caused them to miss a gig with The Time and as a result, Prince fired them from the band.

The timing worked out perfectly though as this hit song made a splash everywhere. Richard Pryor tapped the song as the main theme music for his comedy film Richard Pryor: Here and Now that year. It even became a hit for other artists as covers by Deborah Cox and Beats International both experienced their own rounds of success.

What did The S.O.S. Band say about "Just Be Good to Me"?
Genius Answer

The thought was, “that’s what you get for going down and seeing them girls.” Everybody thought we went down to see some girls in Atlanta. But then… Billboard Magazine came out and there was a picture of us with the S.O.S. Band and we were like trying to hide every Billboard Magazine! That summer… we got in a room (it was myself, Terry, Jesse, Prince, and Morris), Prince just simply goes, “I told you guys not to produce outside acts. And you did. So you’re fired.”
