It’s Just Too Much Lyrics

[Verse 1]
Oh, there's one thing, baby, I just don't understand
Two old women fighting for another man

[Chorus]
You know it's just too much
Oh, you know it's just too much
Oh, it's too much, baby
And I just don't understand

[Verse 2]
Oh, here comes Mary coming over the hill
They say she won't but her sister will

[Chorus]
You know it's just too much
Oh, you know it's just too much
You know it's too much, baby
And I just don't understand
Oh, rock on! Woo!

[Verse 3]
Ohhh, here comes my na, na, na with a buckle of gold
Everybody says, hey, rock your soul

[Chorus]
You know it's just too much
Oh, just too much
You know it's too much, baby
And I just don't understand
[Verse 4]
Hey take me back, baby, now where I belong
Everything, you know, I'm doing wrong

[Chorus]
You know it's just too much
Oh, just too much
Oh, you know it's too much, baby
And I just don't understand
Oh, just

[Verse 5]
Every time I'm going out for my thrill
Here comes Mary and I get no fill
You know it's just too much
Oh, know it's, know it's just too much
Oh, you know it's too much, baby
And I just don't understand

[Outro]
You know it's too, too, too much
You know it's too, too, too much
You know it's too, too, too much
You know it's too, too, too much
You know it's too much, baby
And I just don't understand

Genius Annotation

This boogie-woogie-style rock ‘n’ roll song is best known as being paired in a medley with Sweet Bonnie Brown. There are about 5 recordings that have been released, including one from a bootleg Matrix rehearsal tape. As is canon with The Velvet Underground, this song is improvised, having variations of lyrics between each recording.

At the beginning of the Quine Tapes version, Reed quips, “about five years ago when we used to play it, it was called ‘Ohio Silver’… we don’t call it ‘Ohio Silver’ all too much.” which suggests that the song dates back to about 1964.
