Zak Abel explained the song during an Interview with The Independent Magazine:

For various reasons I grew up with a distorted view of love and self-esteem, and that lends itself to whether you feel worthy of love. For a long time I didn’t think I was worthy, and that can make you feel very alone in the world. And that’s how I was feeling that day when I went into the studio to write, which is why the song is so raw.

The track was also produced and co-written by Francis “Eg” White, whose previously collaborated with Leona Lewis (“I Am”), Kwabs (“Fight for Love”), James Morrison (“Stay Like This”), CeeLo Green (“Purple Hearts”) and Sam Smith (“Good Thing”).

“Deserve To Be Loved” is the first promotional single from Zak Abel’s debut studio album ‘Only When We’re Naked’.

An acoustic music video for the song was posted on Zak Abel’s YouTube channel on November 10, 2015.
